Changed the mp3 player to winamp(minimal) - it seems to work slightly better than sonique.

I will send it over to i-hacked.com to post.

How does installing IE affect W98lite? Do you get the w98 style directory browsing? Or is it just like Famewolf's image with Opera where the browser is fully non-integrated? How much (virtual) disk space is left after this install?

I added I.E. to Famewolf's image. It has the same SMC USB adapter (which has been working great).
The directory browser is unchanged with I.E. There is about 9mb virtual disk space left.

I emailed the image, could it be too big for your email (40mb)?

After borrowiing a friends laptop drive, ghosting it's contents to my PC and then preparing it with everything I need - including the IEDoc - I finally get the laptop into my webplayer.

Up to now I've been using Famewolf's embed98.doc but couldn't surf as Netzero wouldn't work for some reason and AmericanExpress Online (my freeISP) needs at least IE4.0 (128bit) to work at all. So I was pretty excited about the IEDoc.

So I'm in Win98, and reboot to DOS. First thing I notice is that I cannot see my hard drive - even though I could in Windows. I go back into Win98 and bring up a DOS prompt on the drive. I run GETMIMG OLDDOC.IMG and then PUTMIMG EMBED98.IMG. Then I reboot....

Upon rebooting I just get a blank screen with a flashing cursor on it. I've checked all my BIOS settings - tried making both the HD and the DOC the first in the boot list, making IDE primary, none and both - all with the same result.

HELP!!!

cockvirus: i had the same problem getting the webplayer to recognize the harddrive although windows could see it. i repeatedly tried changing the settings in the webplayer setup, but couldn't get the hardware to recognize the harddrive whether specifying the harddrive or changing the order of what boots first etc. so i left windows to recognize the harddrive which meant if i boot to dos then dos would not see the harddrive. but with windows i just had the DOC as the C: drive and the harddrive as the D: drive. windows was seeing the harddrive as a floppy in the system properties.

eventually when the image or something on the DOC got messed up because of the all the tweaking i was doing, i gave up on the DOC and took out the DOC so the webplayer only uses the harddrive as the C: drive. i had to go through the headache of reconfiguring my windows installation to the one C: drive. i'm using IE5.5 with Netcaptor 6.1.1 along with Outlook Express and Windows Media Player. IMHO, IE with Netcaptor is better than Opera even though Opera can also view multiple webpages. FYI, later versions of the "free" ad-supported version of Netcaptor forces you to see the Netcaptor.com website whenever you load the program in addition to the mini title bar ads which i can live with and take up less space than the ads in the free version of Opera. anyways the Win98/Opera DOC image was too plain and too small for me since i needed Windows Media Player which requires IE and DirectX. (btw although i also have RealPlayer installed, RealPlayer doesn't cover every streaming video/audio that i want to play.) now the problem for me is windows sees a ghost D: drive that is exactly the same as the C: drive (same directories, files). although the hardware with the DOC sees the harddrive as the C: drive now, windows also still sees the harddrive as ghost floppy D: drive. the harddrive is an ibm harddrive that i got from that ribbon cables vendor recommended here on the bbs. i have to check the ibm website to see if there is a fix/driver/whatever to eliminate the ghost.

Sorry guys, I haven't tried the DOC just yet. Not sure if it's what I really want.

The only thing really I want to use the Webplayer for is:
1) Share my cable modem connection with my desktop PC
2) Play mp3s from my PC thru the Linksys USB ethernet adapter to the Webplayer.
3) Run PC Anywhere or VNC Viewer so I can use the WP like a remote control for my PC.

I heard that the new Beta version of Winamp uses less CPU time than before so I might try that as well.

I've been busy moving to a new apartment. I'm still baffled why my Linksys USB ethernet adapter keeps crapping out. I'm running WinME on a Toshiba hard drive and the CPU gets blazing hot. Before I install 98lite on the DOC I want to try installing Win95 with USB support onto the hard drive (or should I go back to Win98SE?) That might give the cpu a little bit of a break. Also have to install my Lasanga fan.

Busy week ahead. Will keep you posted.

I wanted to let you know that I had the IE DOC image working fine with an IBM 1GB hard drive. I had to jumper it to be the secondary drive else it would always try to boot off the drive.

I don't know if I mentioned that VNC server and client was on the image as well.

I have a similar need for my webplayer- web browser, mp3 player and quick virtual terminal for my living room.

Please let me know if you are having trouble with an additional drive and I can tell you my bios settings.

I have set this up on 4 webplayers thus far with none having an additional drive problems.

I did get everything working after all. I basically reset the BIOS to the defaults and then went through each and every setting. One setting I changed to DOS and another I changed to Win95--this seemed to do the trick. I now have the Webplayer up and running Win98 lite, IE5.5 and my AmericanExpress browser. Also added HDValet, WinRar, TweakUI and a IE Cache Cleaner. Deleted WinAmp, VNC and some other bits and pieces. I installed Naviscope but uninstalled it after it kept crashing.

I also set up the WarpLink, but everytime I boot it tells me that the device isn't configured properly. I'll have to read that topic a little closer on this forum.

I put everything back together in about 3 minutes and I'm so proud of this little 'puter. It's awesome for surfing in bed with or taking with me on trips. Not bad for free!!

My only concerns are that the unit will get pretty hot so I'll not run it for too long at once. Also could use a virus protection prog - maybe F-Prot will fit on the 3mb that I have left? Also, if something does go wrong I'll have to install everything again.

Anyone know how to transfer the contents of the DOC to a hard drive - in order to backit up? Is is just 'getmimg <image.doc>' ?

Thanks to everyone on this forum for your help. Great crowd!

Jon

Couple of problems:

1)I auto-installed the Famewolf version of Win98 Lite on the DOC as per i-hacked.com's instructions.
2)I keep getting an error message regarding the latest DOC image with Embed98.zip (corrupt file)
3)I would like to upgrade my DOC to the latest version.
4)I'm also having a hard time installing the driver for the Linksys USB ethernet adapter onto the DOC.

Should I just boot off the hard drive, re-format the DOC and start all over again?
Any other helpful suggestions?

dnightfly,

I'm having a problem with the newest Embed.zip when I go to unzip it I get an error message.
Am I supposed to rename the file to Embed.img? What am I doing wrong?

Also, I need to install the drivers for my Linksys USB Ethernet Adapter instead of the SMC adapter. I've tried this but keep getting "Insert Win98 Disk" and then it cannot find the required files. (nettrans.cat and net.cat)

I'm running WinME off a HD at the moment. I've re-formatted the DOC and re-installed the Famewolf embed.img.
I have no problems booting off of either one (just add or remove the HD jumper).

Feel free to e-mail specific instructions on creating my own DOC image.

Thanks,

OK Guys,

I've re-nstalled the first embed98.img (Famewolf version) and have added the Linksys USB drivers to it. I'm on-line using my WebPlayer right now.

I want to play around with it a little more and see what else I can cram into the DOC.
I'm thinking of adding...
1)Winamp instead of Cool Player
2)VNC viewer
3)Internet connection sharing

I'll keep you guys posted.

Everyone,

Before I upload, I just want to play around with it a bit more.
I removed a lot of stuff because I am just using the WP as a workstation.

REMOVED
Zone Alarm - Have it on my desktop PC already.
Dial Up Adapter & Modem - I have a cable modem so no need for dial-up.
Naviscope - too annoying.
The Hard Drive - Runs great without it.

INSTALLED
Linksys USB Drivers
Winamp Lite
VNC Viewer

OTHER ITEMS ON MY LIST
Remove Cool Player? - Winamp Lite is bigger but better.
Remove Opera Browser? - Can I cram a streamlined IE 5.5 on there?
Add Dial-up adapter & Put Modem back in.
Add Net-Zero - One of the only FREE ISPs left.
Put Zone Alarm Back?
Add Anti-virus software?
Add the Lasagna fan that I purchased.

I'll keep you guys posted.

Hi guys.
i tried to get the image from ######, the file does not exist.
the file in i-hacked.com (with the note stating that it's the image with IE5.5 & Winamp) is corrupt. (i've dl'd it several times, and each time i tried to unzip it, it was corrupt.)
i then went to the FTP site shown above and dl'd embed98.img, but that seems to re-install the original Virgin OS onto the DOC. (i then reinstalled MY previous working image, and it worked fine, so i know the BIOS settings are correct.)
I am very interested in the IE5.5 image, (i'm trying to get www.Dialpad.com *JAVA Based* working on my Webplayer-Opera5 just aint cuttin it.)
if anyone can post the working 98w/IE5.5 image or email me with info, that would be most appreciated.
Thanks ahead of time guys.

No Meli...
I dont think so. the people on this group have been very cooperative in the past and have helped get people rolling with the Webplayer before. Heck, after i stated that the file on the site seemed incorrect, the link was taken down, (possibly to check it/make sure the image was correct.) So i know that the i-hacked website is being actively worked on, (for our benefit.)
Seems more like other things are going on, and people just have other things to do.
besides, i've had Opera for 6 months, what's another 6 days...

I'm very sorry about the delay, the image does exist. I posted the wrong image to the ftp site. I though I had the good copy at home, turns out it was on my work computer. I will post it to the ftp site again tonight.

I really does work, although it does not contain the java VM. You can try to fit it on there, there was 9mb left last time I installed it (I've since added a cordless mouse, and have only 4 mb left).

I will post it as iedoc.img.

SUCCESS!!!

I also added the Linksys USB drivers.
Got rid of VNC server(green icon) and just have the VNCviewer.exe (red icon) so I can connect to my desktop pc (which is what I am doing as I type this)

I'll let you guys know if I can cram anything else on here like Netzero (FREE ISP) but it'll be a tight squeeze.

Have some questions about the IE5.5/Winamp version of the DOC image...
BTW, excellent job!
Anyway:
a) Are all the drives supposed to be running in MS-DOS compatibility mode?
b) How can I remove the modem from the hardware config? It won't even let me into the modem properties or allow me to delete it...registry settings?
c) What registry settings/files are there from the modem/other USB Nics (I'm using the Linksys and had to install the drivers manually)?

Thanks for all the help...

What are the advantages/disadvantages of having the DOC programmed with IE5.5 versus Opera 4?

Opera is very minimal. No java, no flash, no bells and whistles.

I prefer IE 5.5 in minimal mode. It's still a bit bloaty but you can view pages with frames, flash and java, also use things like Yahoo Companion toolbar. It's more integrated into Windows.

Anybody else wanna add their two cents?

Is the IE 5.5 image that much slower? I have downloaded both and am wondering if i should bother trying it. Does it include jull JAVA support? Are the errors in the Device Manager serious? Thanks.

set up a virgin with the ie doc yesterday.. very smooth.. when it came up, it didn't recognize my usb nic.. so I had to get the drivers going for it..

How I got the drivers (not part of the image) into the doc:
copy required drivers (win98 cab files to) onto a hard drive
attach hard drive to Web Player
in bios disable primary master (or whatever your HD is configured as)
boot off the doc (obviously this is after the doc has been programmed)
it will see the hard drive when it gets to windows.., allowing you do do whatever you want..

Question... If I want to use the internal dial-up modem, I can't use the IE 5.5 version, right? In that case, I'm forced to use Opera? I'm wondering if anyone has a version of the DOC image that includes IE 5.5 with regular modem dial-up access?

Thanks,

Randy

Hey All,

Youve all been a great help. I am having difficulties getting my WIN98 install to correctly load the Media GX drivers. I have installed the audio and video drivers, but I only get feedback out of the sound when I adjust the volume. I noticed that the DOC folks have a working version. I was hoping that someone could help be get the contents of the embedded.img in a zip file. I noticed that they already have all the correct drvers in their load. (IE system components Cyrix GX 5300 ACPI and the Cyrix PCI bus...I cant seem to find these files.) THe system is finding an "unknown" PCI bridge, and I have npo driver for this!

Please help!
Thanks
