inherited WP might be dead?
screen backlight is on, no other activity?

I just inherited a WP from a friend in pieces. I think I put all the cables where they go, and I plugged it in. It does power on (without hitting the power button)... the front LEDs go on, then just the power light remains on, solid green. The screen does light up, but it does seem to be just the backlight, as it looks the same without the video cable plugged in. My friend thought he fried it (and thus I inherited it). Are there any tests I can do to verify if it is living? if it is dead, can I use the keyboard with my irDA port on a linux laptop?

Couple of things:

1)You can adjust the screen brightness with the dial next to the volume dial.

2)As the machine is powering up hit the F2 key (top of keyboard 3rd key from left ... little book icon).
That'll get you to the BIOS log-in screen. Type schwasck and hit enter.

3)If you don't see any of this, then your screen may be fried.

4)Does the machine still have the DOC and does it use a hard drive?

5)The keyboard CANNOT be used with IrDA. It is slow speed infrared like a TV remote not fast infrared like an IrDA device.

If you get into the BIOS you can check the other posts in this board to walk you thru system set up.

Contrast knob does nothing... although something must be happening, since I do hear "computer noises" out of the speakers. Also, the WP does respond to Ctrl-Alt-Music, but not to Book (F2). :( any other ideas?

I just have the DOC, but plan to plug in a lard drive once I can get my hands on one.

any way I can get video out of it if the screen really is broken?

Would powering it on without a DOC make any difference? (w/o DOC or hdd)

I've powered it on with and without the modem... still no go. :/

OK so you start the machine and the backlight comes on, noises etc, but no screen image...hmmmm. Are all the screen wires connected in the correct place? Are there any damaged wires or connectors?

Worst case - video chips could be fried. There's one on the top of the motherboard and one on the bottom.
The backlight would still work.
Best case - just missing the video drivers.
Maybe the DOC been formatted and wiped out?
But you should still be able to see the BIOS. Hmmmmmmm??

Any idea what your friend did to the machine before he gave it to you?
I fried the lower video chip on my first WP when I reassembled it.

I did reassemble it from componenets, and it is possible the video circuits are fried; my friend says all he did is take it apart, and claims it was in working order when dissassembled. Would powering it on w/o a DOC make any difference? I think I'll try plugging everything in again right now and see if I can get any results. Still waiting on a HDD to plug in... would that possibly help?

Well, the backlight goes on, but no video image anywhere. I still haven't gotten my hands on a laptop HDD, but I'm begining to believe that it wouldn't help. I'm not quite ready to dump it yet, but if I do, I'll post something. Keep the suggestions coming!
