WEBPLAYER TIMEBOMB?
Webplayer lost its password and browser

Is there a timebomb built into the Webplayer to disable it after a certain time? Mine was working fine yesterday. Today I noticed when I turned it on that the normal sign-in (or connect) screen did not appear after it prepared for the internet. Instead it went right to dialing to my local ISP. It got to the "verifying name and password" and then disconnected. But oddly, it automatically redialed the ISP over and over getting the same result. It never redialed automatically before. I figured the password wasn't being accepted by my ISP, so I went into the control panel (which I had to do by unplugging the phone wire to get the dialup error screen and then pressed control-music since I could not get to the connect screen) and low and behold, my password and two of my user names fields were blank in the user stats panel and one of the other panels. I filled those back in and restarted. It then connected to my ISP, but the normal virgin connect browser did not appear. Instead I got a white screen with the message "This service has been discontinued. Sorry for the inconvenience". So now I have no browser and no way surf the net even though I am connected to the ISP. Anyone know whats happened, and any way to get the browser back without having to put windows on the DOC or install a hard drive?

Surely this is related to the closure of teh VirginConnect service and the fact that so far we haven't been able to set a new home page. It seems that (aside from the user name fields getting blanked) the browser is trying to find the Virgin Homepage which is now dead. Try calling up any of the pages like www.virginconnectme.com or the FAQ pages from any browser and it will time out. It seems like they've pulled that entire server.

If we can find out how to direct it to a new home page I think it will still work. Other than that it's the laptop HD and Win98 I guess....

That's possible, but the browser was still working for a few weeks after the virginconnect webpage was turned off. Shouldn't the browser be on the DOC anyway, rather than being related to virgin's website? It used to come on before the webplayer connected to the web. And why is there no longer a "connect" screen after the webplayer is turned on and after it finishes "preparing for the internet"?

it probably stores things like your favorites and some other stuff on a server that was only taken down recently. A packet sniffer and a machine set up with a virtual phone line would come in real handy right now..
