Serials?

Has anyone had any luck getting the serial port(s) to work yet?

They should work. The modem connector is actually a serial port and its default setting is COM1.
CN6 is default set at COM2. I didn't have the time yet to check the serials into detail.
For pin-out info of the serial ports read the serial story on my site:

Hey, somebody actually reads that stuff
Thanks. Until now I've done pretty well I think in updating the site.
As long you all keep me inspired I'll continue doing so in the future.

The signals on the CN6 & CN15 connectors are TTL so probably causes troubles with a lot of serial peripherals.
There's an interface needed to translate the signals to real RS232 and that depends a bit on what you want the serial connection for.
I'll try to perform some experiments but that will take a while.

I need both serials out to db9 male, I need the max chips in.. Either that or I will go buy a usb->serial thing.

EMU. =)

Luckily I have several max232 chips laying around.

A buddy of mine has both serials up and running. I haven't got to make the mod yet.

Here is his first pass on the pin-outs. They might not be 100% accurate.

Looking at the mobo such that the CPU is on the top right:

+5 GND
DCD w/pu RX w/pu
TX DTR
DSR RTS
+5 GND
CTS RI w/pu
? audio in
? GND

CTS ? DSR TX DCD +5
RI - RTS DCD RXpu GND

Obviously the modem connector is the vertical one, the serial header the other. There is likely an LED hookup on one or both of the ? pins on the modem connector.

DrRP,

I don't know if you have been at my site yet, but the pin-outs are there for some time now.
Thanks for the tip on the audio pin. That could be the unidentified one. I look into that.

Serial ports should indeed work fine with one of the tranceiver devices of Maxim or Linear Technologies.
There's a mod available from the iopener that should work. The link for that is posted by Dag in the another thread.

hevnsnt,

Have you done anything yet with the maxim chips?
Do you need any info to start with?

It should work for just rxd and txd signals but for a full RS-232 wiring you need 5 receivers and 3 transmitters.
That would be taking 3 MAX232's or one of the MAX3240 series. I can't get to it here so
I'll have to order it somewhere and this will take some time.

BTW: my attention is taking me somewhere else for the moment. See other thread.

Does anyone have a copy of the pinouts (verified) for the serial ports? I'd like to do the MAX235 mod...

Thanks!

What are the pinouts for COM1 ? Is it the same as the i-Opener's modem?

I thought some time ago someone used a i-Opener modem in place of the one that came with the Webplayer. If this is true then the quick and easy way would be to buy one of Badflash's RS232 boards as I made it work in a GCT since it was the same on the modem header and made a 10 pin cable that connected the correct pinouts to the COM2 header.

Even without the RS232 board you should be able to make the RS232 converter using one MAX235 chip for each port, then there would be no need for more than one chip. Check out Perfect's i-Opener mods which at the bottom of the page has schematics for a ttl to rs232 ports conversion using the MAX235 chip and one capaciter.
