Ok, we get to keep the Webplayer after three years but what good will it be at the end of three years? Are we going to have to keep paying Virgin for internet access for the machine when three years are up? We won't be able to configure it to use another ISP (like a free ISP) will we?

I think the general idea is that after 3 years you may continue to use their dialup service for free. I doubt that they would provide provisions for use with other ISPs, but by then we will be able to pop the top without consequence, so someone will find out how to mess with it (if it's even worth it 3 years from now).

In three years, this thing will be about as worthless as an XT.

You know, everyone keeps saying this thing'll make a nice doorstop in three years. I disagree. There are a lot of 3 year old PC's in use today. A few million. Also, monitors have an even longer life span. Hopefully in three years I'll be able to dump the MB and make a cool device. I've got no idea what I might want it to be, but something with a keyboard and a flat panel display will allow for a lot of possibilities. So just chill with the "it's a piece of crap now and will be a piece of triple-crap in three years" lines.

After the three years are up these could be hooked up to a USB Cellular Modem ,GPS reciever and CD-ROM drive and used in a Van/truck/SUV for web surfing, moving map display, or MP3 playing. Although in three years these functions will be built into a screen in your dashboard. Maybe Ill just stick it my tornado bunker to access weather sites and porn.

In 3 years, we'll all have cheap, hi-res screens like this. There is just tons of VC going into R&D for displays.

This might come in handy for a cheap terminal or something though. Best thing would be to rip out the mobo, and throw in your new, obsolete but cheap duron II low-power mobile, or maybe Transmeta chip, on an all-in-one mobo. Am suer it will fit in the same case, with a 20-30 GB micro HD.

Oh yeah, by then the USB mouse should be working :)

When 3 years are up, you still continue to use the service, free. No $50 yearly fee. And the unit is yours, so you do with it what you please.

Ah, well thats assuming Virgin will still support it. And the fact that DSL or greater speed will be obsequieous <sp> kinda kills that idea.

Unless you _like_ surfing at 56k :)
The web is only getting more multimedia based, meaning larger and larger webpages.

Only use for it would be if Virgin kills or improves the JVM, goes with straight Linux or other low footprint OS( QNX, FreeBSD). Adding functional USB support through Linux would allow broadband access, and actual use of the unit.
