Problem with LCD
Problem with LCD

Hi everyone, this is my first post here.
I haven't hacked them yet, but I powered my webplayers up to make sure they were all in working order. One of them has a very bizarre problem with the LCD:

On the bottom half of the screen only, active pixels (not black ones) are displayed correctly only in some vertical lines, whereas other vertical lines light up in one color only - it's something of a rainbow effect, if that helps explain it.

I wonder what is causing this and how I can fix it. I remember seeing posts earlier that there are 2 chips, one each controlling hald of the LCD? Does that have something to do with it, or might it just be a problem with the connection cable - thoughts anyone?
thanks!

I fried a lower video chip on one of my WPs and that's sorta what it looked like. The entire bottom of the screen looked like it had white lace hanging in front of it. The top half of the screen was fine.

You can try opening up the case (also carefully opening the case around the screen) and checking out the wires and connectors. Make sure nothing is cut, pinched or diconnected. If those are all ok then it might be a fried video chip. Don't know why it would be fried if it hasn't been taken apart yet.

We all know fried chips are not good for you. If that's the case then the only solution is to sell it for parts.
The folks on this board are always looking for spare parts so no worries there. Parts is parts.

Good luck,

The 5530 compagnion chip which is on the opposite side of the cpu acts as the video chip.
It uses some of the so-dimm memory to build the video images.
The DSTN LC-display needs a specific control and that's were the cx9210 comes in.
This one gets the signal from the 5530 and builds two half screens for the lcd and stocks
it in the two RAM chips u8 and u24.
It could be that one of the two is broken or has bad contacts.
It could also be a bad cable because the data signals for the upper side and the lower side of the screen are
being distributed seperately.

Since you have more than one unit it will be easy to test if the dstn-connector or -cable causes the error or not.

Hi,
Before you trash the unit, check this out....
Your problem may be with the LCD inverter Board.
Open up the frame around the LCD Panel(Carefully).
Inside between the two speakers you will see a Printed circuit board(Inverter PCB)
Look at the 2 screws holding the board in place...are they insulated with tape?
If not, remove the screws, insulate the mounting holes with tape top and bottom
of pcb so that the screw head is insulated from the board on top, and the board is
insulated from the standoffs it mounts to on bottom. Re-mount the
board, then retest....(there have been known shorting problems(intermittent) with this board which
may be causing your problem)...(Video for these units are built into the processor)

Regards

I might have a solution for those with scrambled screen images.
I was able to repair a mainboard by replacing one the video memory chips.
