I believe that I have found the key to solving MOST of our USB problems. Many of us have toiled with the idea of using a USB hub because we think that the problem is in the USB power supply. But the problem that we ALL have run into is that the USB ethernet doesn't work when it's plugged into the USB hub. Well, the setup that I have (and is working beautifully) is a Belkin powered USB hub and a Belkin USB ethernet adapter. Seems that Belkin works well with Belkin products. I tried a combination of Belkin hub and a Linksys USB ethernet adapter. The Webplayer just refused to recognize the adapter. With the Belkin adapter, it powers up and is recognized by the Webplayer. Currently, I have a Belkin ethernet adapter, USB keyboard and a Microsoft optical mouse connected into the Belkin hub. Everything gets powered up and detected by the Webplayer. Another good part about the combination is that you can transfer large files without it locking up. The only problem that I've had was transfering a 80MB file. It locked up everytime I tried to transfer it. Another problem is that while I'm playing MP3s using Winamp Lite, the music is jumpy. Probably because the USB drains so much of the CPU power. But surfing the net is great. So I guess it's just a partial fix.

see my problem is still that the ethernet, while working fine for a while, doesnt last very long. On my webplayer, the ethernet will last anywhere from 1-12 hours, but I need it to be able to run forever. No such luck! How is everyone elses USB ethernet working?

My ethernet adapter is the same too. I have the SMC EZ Connect USB Adapter. Model #2202 USB/ETH. Mine works fine for a long time when Im just on the internet via network, but when I start transferring large files over 15 MB, it dies.

Hi,
I've been fiddling with usb devices - here's what I have :
A sandisk sddr-31 compactflash adaptor - works great with current (small - 45k) driver on sandisks website.
A Lexmark Z32 printer - again no problems with standard drivers.
A Micra Digital USB ethernet adaptor. This did not work with it's original supplied driver (the link light lit, but no usb). Internally , it is a Kawasaki chipset, so off I went to www.ksli.com to get a driver from http://www.klsi.com/drivers/index.htm (its u2e304.zip). When installed, this now works fine. It installed an older version of the files that came with my adaptor, but the older ones work where the new ones don't.

Works fine now - I can load jpg's (400kb work ones) other the usb ethernet whilst playing files with winamp.

I can also plug in the compactflash drive and transfer 32MB (The 8 largest files from Office 97, copied/pasted with explorer) from our netware server to the flash card , whilst playing mp3's with no skipping (I've only a 32MB card to play with). I dunno how much a the sandisk unit draws (I guess not much) but if there were processor usage / power problems with ethernet I'd thought I'd have seen something by now.

(Side note - enabling "client for netware networks" as the login processor in network settings kills my audio. "Client for microsoft networks" login doesn't. That's weird!)

I can plug and unplug the usb and things keep going. Pressing the sleep button with the usb ethernet connected just wakes it back up after a second. With the power management set to 10 mins and playing winamp it tries to switch off but wakes back up again - winamp continues to play.

I've still only got the 48MB DOC in it, so that's about the extent of what I can do.
Oh, if you need to process word/excel files get that software602 package. Works good and with everything installed on my system (sandisk/ethernet/lexmark/software602/winamp + original famewolf image) I've got about 10MB free.

Regards
Griffo

Its a set of word processor / excel / photo applications. It can read/write office 97 docs (dunno about 2000, I don't have it) Its also about 15MB in size meaning you can squeeeeeze it onto the DOC with about 13MB left for docs.
Its *free* for non-commercial use and you can download it at http://www.software602.com/download/pcs_mirrors.html

<end of blatant software602 propaganda>
