Conflict between sound system and keyboard/trackball

I posted a little while ago about the keyboard/trackball not working under Windows 95. Well, I managed to fix that by disabling the USB subsystem (kind of a bad solution, since I have a USB zip drive) but the problem seems to also be linked to the sound system. Now, the keyboard works fine until I try to play a MP3 file or movie, using any number of programs (Winamp, Sonique, Windows Media Player), after playing for a few seconds, the keyboard/trackball will stop responding. I have to unplug the system and reboot to get it back. Playing any audio/video file elicits this behavior. All of the National Express drivers (including the PCI bridge, etc) are installed and everything is muted in the mixer but main and WAV sound. I have tried moving the resources (IRQ/DMA) around but to no avail. I can't get Windows 98 installed, and don't have Windows Me to try. If anyone has seen this kind of problem, please advise.

In your earlier post you said 98 "refused" to install. Could you elaborate on the word "refused"? Are you trying an upgrade or full version? 98 or 98SE? The reason I am asking is in order to get 95 to work with the usb you need to install the updates for 95 making it "almost" win98. As most would agree, 98SE is more stable than 95 with the extra baggage. I think you would be happier with win98SE. Mine WP sure works good. Please email me at johnl83@hotmail.com I have another idea that might help if you are interested

The only OS I was able to get successfully installed was Windows 95 OSR2 (with the USB supplement). This was an OEM version. I also have an OEM Windows 98, a beta Windows 98, and Windows 98SE updgrade CD. When I did a clean install with Windows 98, after installing and restarting, I only got a "Windows Protection Error." Windows would not load at all. I tried many different methods of installing, but got the same or similar errors each time. The beta version also refused to install, saying that it "couldn't open the Nondisclosure Agreement." (I planned to use the Win98SE update after installing it). I would love to install another version of Windows, since 95 is very unstable and I get blue screens (fatal errors) all the time. Since the sound barely works, it basically defeats the purpose of the Webplayer (I'm using it as a MP3 jukebox). When I get back from vacation, I'll try to put Windows Me on there and see if it fixes the problem. I'll also email you, Alpha, when I return. Thanks for your help!
