The COM ports are TTL, you need RS232 converter mod like Jack at http://www.badflash.com is selling using the MAX235 RS232 driver chip, I saw under one of the GPS threads that someone had got the Rand Mcnally GPS receiver to work with just TTL port but I don't believe it was too stable.
