you can be pretty sure an alram type noise is a bad drive...there's nothing in there that should make anything but a spinning/whirring type of noise...i have heard some weird sounds from HDDs before, and seen some of them burst into flames...i suggest a new HDD

OK, wait a sec, Let's get a few more details before you toss out the HD.
Let's start with the obvious first:
1)What kind of alarm type noise? Just a beep from the WebPlayer or some other alert?
2)Is the IDE cable installed correctly?
3)Do you have the correct jumpers on the HD? I had a similar problem installing an IBM drive.
4)Is the hard drive powering up? Do you hear it spinning and clicking?
5)Are your BIOS settings correct so the WebPlayer will boot off the hard drive?
6)Did you format the hard drive and install the neccessary system files for Windows?
7)Are you installing Win98 or is it already installed on the drive? You need to do a fresh install on the WebPlayer.
I have a similar problem too. I booted up from the hard drive, clean installed. When I finished the win98 installation, it asked me to reboot. But it never came up. The screen only shows a blinking cursor. Thanks a lot!
