Webplayer as Cyber-Cafe Client
Ways to make this work in a Cyber-Cafe

Does anyone have any experience using the Webplayer in a cyber-cafe setting? I need to know if they will work on a 10/100 LAN and if there will be any sort of restrictions to the customers.

considering you can install just about any major OS to this thing i can't see any issues other than the limit of said OS...networking isn't really an issue either as you can use a USB ethernet adapter (won't give you full 100 but it works on a 10/100 network)...there are no more restrictions on this than there would be on any other computer, since that is all the webplayer is, a computer

You would have to put the keyboard on a leash to keep them from walking out the door, but otherwise a USB ethernet device will work fine. Setting up the DOC with all the necessary stuff would take some time if you use a brand of USB ethernet that is not supported by the current DOC images. Installing any DOC image will require taking the Webplayer apart and connecting a laptop drive to the intenal IDE connector so that you can boot into DOS and run the software needed to program the DOC.

It's not all the difficult, and there are plenty of how to sites that will walk you through the process.

Hello,

We own a small cyber-cafe and are looking at the webplayer as a possible addition to our mix. We now have one unit with the built-in Ethernet connection as a "proof or concept" model.

We need to locate someone with the right skill set and equipment to program a new DOC that contains very basic Windows with sound support, Internet Explorer, AOL Instant Messenger, and that's about it. We need one DOC to be fully tested before ordering a total of 10 more.

Could you help us locate someone to do this?

Thanks,
Rand
