I have successfully used an Iomega USB zip drive, an Iomega USB CDrw, and a 3com USB ethernet connector. I plugged in an Intel USB Web Cam and it just kills the usb ports - both of them. They resore upon rebooting but after the web cam is plugged in nothing is recognized by the ports - no lights - nothing. Are UB web cams power hungry or is it just more webplayer USB flakiness?

Excuse me for changing the subject, but did you ever get the 3com USB ethernet connector 3C460B to work? I just spent several hours with no luck. Then I noticed your prior posts.
I have noticed the 3com coming closer to working when my USB mouse is unplugged?

Let me have another go at it. Try this in the meantime: Unplug everything from the usb ports with the power off. Then power up the webplayer and let it finish booting completely. The plug in the network adapter. Wait about a minute and see if you get activity. Then you can plug in your other usb device.
