I saw there is a pins connector for compact flash on this virgin mother board. Have any one try to install the connector and use the compact flash? Any advice of how going to do this? Thanks

Time is my worst enemy at the moment.

I did try it.I have ordered a CF connector and soldered it to the board.
It doesn't work. There are some components missing on the back of the mainboard.
There will be a moment I will have the time to figure it out and then I will
write a story on it, but for now maybe someone else will do it?

If you can't wait, buy one of those CF/IDE adapters.
Some of them are so cheap you don't want to even bother
of installing a CF connector to your mainboard ;)

Thanks for the info. Do you know any place selling the CF/IDE adapters?

ES&S
Mesanet
TAPR
Flashmemory
Detailed explanation on this last one and some other general information on the subject on Dan's Data
and I guess if you look a bit, there's even more.

I did some quick searching and found PC Engines. I have confirmed that their CF-IDE adapter supports Type I CF and am waiting to hear back on another question, whether it can be jumpered slave/master. (I expect the answer to be yes, close inspection shows a J5 labelled "master") I've just ordered one from these guys and will let y'all know how it works out. I'm planning a honeymoon to Italy in the fall and would love to be able to bring the webplayer to email pics while travelling. My Canon PS100 Elph uses CF and I've been unable to get the software to let me connect it with the usual USB cable. If I could download pics from the CF Card to the Harddrive it would also free me up to take lotsa pics.

Does anyone have any ideas about any of the following:
Power - Would the webplayer accept Italian power (Electrical, not Macho or Political) if I found or constructed a replacement cable to run from the tranformer to wall outlet with the appropriate plug on the end? No pain in the but adapters.
Telephone - Are the phone jacks different over there? What about sending data - anyone know of problems with quality?
An ISP - I have a cable modem so I don't have a dial-up account anymore. Can anyone suggest an ISP that I could get for the month and maybe has international/Europe access numbers. Would this be a good case for AO-Hell? Are there free Italian ISP's?

>>My Canon PS100 Elph uses CF and I've been unable to get the software to let me connect it with the usual USB cable.

Doesn't the software that comes with the camera?

>>Power - Would the webplayer accept Italian power

yep, the powersupply is an international type: 100-240V and 50-60Hz
This is sufficient worldwide.

>>if I found or constructed a replacement cable to run from the tranformer to wall outlet with the appropriate plug on the end?

You can probably find a suitable power cable localy. One end is the same as a pc power supply socket so that wouldn't be so
difficult to find. They have two different plugs in Italy. Look here for more information: Help for World Travelers and take the World Electric Guide section.

>>Telephone - Are the phone jacks different over there?

Yes they are. Be carefull with plugging in modems in an unkown telephone plug.
Different voltage signals can damage your modem. There are adapters available for this.
Look on the same site for more info.

>>An ISP - Can anyone suggest an ISP that I could get for the month and maybe has international/Europe access numbers.

Try this one: GRIC is an international alliance of ISP's serving you
with worldwide access to the internet.

I have two of the PCEngines IDE -> CF adapters and they work beautifully. I can confirm that they do have a jumper that sets master/slave. The ones I have take a standard 4-pin molex connector for power, but only +5V and ground are needed (the 12V connector is wired straight to ground).

The adapters have taken up residence in my Acer NT-150 boxes.

K-Ray, Thanks for all the info!!!!!

On the PC-Engine CF/IDE adapter, I've ordered a 44-pin adapter so there shouldn't be any issue getting it to work in the webplayer. Abouting using it with a hard drive, I was told the following:

Master / slave support is present, but depends on the compatibility between
2.5" hard drive and the CompactFlash card. I cannot guarantee it will work,
this is a grey area of the ATA spec...

So here's hoping.

K-Ray and others, thanks for all the info.
PC-Engine CF/IDE adapter one looks too big (2x4) to fit in the CF area (next to the 44pin harddrive). The one from Mesanet looks small and it said to have the master/slave jumper too.
Thanks again.

I got it to work.
I got the CF to IDE from http://www.mesanet.com, set the cf-ide card to slave, also set my hdd to slave (see Dag's cd-rom inside post). The hdd came up as c drive and the cf-ide came up as d drive. I am running win98. I have a few cards, the viking 128, HP (sandisk) 16, Canon (sandisk) 16 and Lexard 32 (usb enabled), all work.
The Lexard 16 (also usb enabled) doesn't work at all. The system bio can not see it. I have two of these
cf card, and they both can not be seen by bio, they works fine on the Digital Camera (canon S20). Don't know if I want to call Lexar or Mesanet, kind of hard to explain what I am doing, some time.
Mesanet is great. I called and told just fax the order in to them they bill me later. I did and got the cf-ide and still waiting for my bill, price on shipping slip was covered.
Once again, thanks
