On a (somewhat) related note:
How do you make a bootable DOC image ? I've been struggling with this problem for at least 2 weeks now. I've got a (2.4.4) kernel patched with m-sys drivers that I can load from external hard disk and uses the DOC as root file system. But try as I might I can't get anything to boot from the DOC. Can anyone tell me what magical incantation am I missing ?

just the info
Did you download linux util from M-sys for doc2000 (dlilo included, i think)?.

I"m using Dlilo instead modified lilo.
in kernel 2.4.3 or later , we can compile kernel with doc200 support.. or you can use linux util from M-sys (try to download dos utility too, you might need that)
compile it as a module for avoiding copyrights violation...:)for sure....

you can build a strip version linux into doc through linux utility..

I think, the problem is lilo . make sure that lilo put the right info to the DOC..
(I'm using Dlilo from M-sys)

try to download linux image from http://www.ccimackay.com/~dgriffith/ and copy it into DOC using DOS putmimg util, mount and read lilo config and investigate from that image.. (i did it at the first time to get the structure of File System)

don't forget to backup and dformat you doc...( Make it clean.)

PS: for xwindows... you can grab XF86_SVGA and xf86config from linux_virgin at sourceforge and alot of usefull resources that you can't ignore it..
.

hope it will help you...

Pete

PS can you explain briefly all your steps to make bootable DOC

Hey,

The linux image up on i-hacked has some CRC errors in the zip. I tried 2 downloads with same results. I'm looking forward to trying this out on the Virgin.

ftp://24.249.57.120/dgriffith/linux.zip

That was the link that erred out for me

The image on my webpage at www.ccimackay.com/~dgriffith doesn't have all the goodies that pete's has.
Although it has been split into convenient self extracting 1.44MB chunks

Pete - how big is your file? To get my image to 10.5MB I had to:

Get everything set up just right
tar up the entire DOC filesystem to my hard drive
zap the whole doc with a dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/(mtd drive) (or something like that - i'd have to look it back up)
extract the filesystem back onto the doc, and run lilo again.

Otherwise the junk from adding / deleting files still exists in the ext2 nodes, and doesn't compress very well.
(I got DOC image filesizes of about 40MB otherwise)

Cheers,

Dave

hi Dave
The size around 30 MB , allincluding opera , blackbox, busy box, tiny login, utilities that needed I Think).
for the basic configuration,( bare system, tiny login, busy box) around 15MB, almost the same size as yours,
Frankly, I grabbed XF86_SVGA for media GX from your image :).. and learned a lot from that,,, Thanks..

In you Image, i faced some problem, : dodn't recgnized DOC very well.. but it really working, fvwm is not working properly (BUT kind of working)and no USB support for HDrive and CDROM/CDRW.. . But It helped me alot to learn more deeper :).

I used Linux utility from msys to make DOC bootable.. and transfer some files... skeleton,, etc. bin... sbin... wooohhh,, was a long night :(...

I just installed a laptop hardrive one the back( don't fit inside, lazy to make modification..) as secondary harddrive(slave), Webplayer does'nt recognize it, but linux do ( Linux skip BIOS,, and take care everthing).. , I stuff all my MP3 files.. on it (through USB CDRW, faster than transffering from netwotrk).
my webplayer serves as a mini GUI (complete system,, web broser, and mp3 station)

The next plan is, to bind shortcut key in blackbox for making lifer easy :)..
like: press F1 key play mp3, F2 key open webbrowser... etc ....
I have to write program in bash shell ( the only way to do or in C)..
For my remote controller, I will use Visor handsroing loaded with learing remote control ( beam webplayer jeyboard ti visor infarread for learning phase)..whoo a long ride, slow but sure...
please give me any ideas...

I hope it will help U,, ans kind of sharing

Peace and Peace
Pete

PS: try to upload the image, but have same problem with ny windows machine, if the file kind of big....

I saw your web-player linux distro. I invited pedxing (Stephen) who is putting together a virgin-webplayer distro as well, to join the project that chaezewhiz and I are working on in the GCT board. Check out
http://www.linux-hacker.net/cgi-bin/UltraBoard/UltraBoard.pl?Action=ShowPost&Board=aolgw&Post=60&Idle=0&Sort=0&Order=Descend&Page=0&Session=
for our status/progress. chaeze is working on midori to work on the GCT and I am working on a distro based on Jailbait to work with the GCT, Allwell 3036N, and the ThinkNIC. I hope to merge all my work into his midori distro- that is where your webplayer work comes in... I would like to invite you to join us in our quest to make a distro which works on all the IA-platforms. Your DOC experience I am sure will be priceless for other IA's using DOC's.

Well showing interest was the only prerequisite. :) I recommend members setup a few e-mail accounts on whatever free service is your favorite. We can then share those publically. Next I guess we should setup a sourceforge project and start placing stuff there.

Setting up a few documents.

1) Specifications document(s)
2) HowTo's for all the supported IA platforms.
3) Task List

Communication:
1) Talk like crazy
2) Talk more

Maybe sourceforge is not the best host site for this- I will have to read all their stuff... maybe we can ask codeman if he wants to do some hosting. Also kray seemed to be willing to do a little hosting. I also may ask another person I know who may be willing to host it.

Pete,
Could you remake the same image, but include the Kaweth and other network card drivers. I am a linux enthusiast, and I could probably figure it out - if given exorbitant amounts of time. But of course that is more time than I have right now. I love the image that you made, but I have the Kawasaki chipset usb ethernet plugged into the webplayer.

Guys,
I was wondering... what is the status of this project? I'm VERY interested in your findings. I've been following all the threads I can about this topic. I had an idea also of using a Linksys wireless USB ethernet and then having a BootP server that would host an X image for the WP. That way, the only thing the WPs need on their 48 Mb DOC is network startup info an basic kernel, Right? I was thinking it might be relatively simple, but I don't have enough experience yet with *nix to make it happen. I'm not a PRO, but not afraid to get my hands dirty. I have 2 56k WPs currently. If we could make this BootP server option work, then I might place more around the house, each having it's own "image" on the BootP server. Your comments and thoughts are welcome.
BTW - here's something I found tht I believe will be of intrest:

Are you able to help out again? I would like to get my webplayer going just like the image you made, except with multiple ethernet cards for it. I have your image on your website. Is there a way to get the kaweth drivers for the image you made? I could just load your image, and then stick on a hard drive, and copy the .o files or whatever. Then I or someone else could make a new image. I really am interested in getting this working.
Thanks,

I do my best to help you with my spare time. I has just moved to new place, the place still messy :) (still searching the job, though). I will dig up the linux image , which has pegasus driver. hopefully, I can compile kawasiki driver as module. The way I create doc image is through a complete running Linux Redhat 6.2 with kernel 2.4.3 and compile all the driver, copy to doc image one by one using a script file.
