Different versions of mainboards around !!! (USB users: READ THIS)
Read this very important thread

Amazing! It took us until now to find out that there are at least two different mainboards.
Well I even think at least three.
First I can remember of some one having one of the first Virgin Webplayers around which have
a floppy connector on board. I don't know if there is any other difference with the mainboards itself though.

Anyway, last week Chauncy launched his R236 story and guess what, mine doesn't have a R236.
So, after asking for some pictures Lucubrate did post one and look there: there is another difference on the same picture.

So now, any other differences?
Yes, have a look for instance on the site of Dag and
Larwe.
It's not so easy to see but is quite strange nobody has noticed it before now.
On the right of the cpu, LARWE's board has two big planes, dag's doesn't.
Also I see a little difference just beside the USB connectors and guess what:
This part takes care of the power supply of the USB connectors !!
If we want to know why some people have luck with a good USB connections and other
always seems to have problems with, maybe here can be the answer.
Also on the back side there are some differences to be seen.
Again also in the USB neighborhood, the track layout is different.
I'm going to look for some more clear pictures on this case.

If you can please post as many pictures as possible and let us know.
This might reveal some very important matters, also apart from the USB issue.

thx

Now this is really embarrassing, I have one mainboard of the other version myself.
It's one that came from the co-op. The other ones are all the same.
So the one thing I can come up with until now is this:
To all USB users, please open the case of your webplayer (pull the plug!!)
and seen from the back of your webplayer look to the right of the USB connectors.
There should be a capacitor TC12 in both cases.
To the right of that is F1: a fuse (light green rectangle which has 1X1 labeled)or U33: a chip which does current limiting (a black square with M2545A printed on it).
Now, what I want to know of you is which type mainboard you have and how is your USB doing?
If I got it right the bad answers should come from the fused board owners, one with the chip should
be more lucky in using USB.
A normal fuse can be too high ohmic which gives a voltage drop when high currents are drawn.
So the chip is a solution for that only taking 30mV away. Secondly the tracks running the power
signals have been layouted wider which also makes a better result in high current draws.
The chip is mainly used in USB hubs.
Also on other places of the mainboard you can see bigger planes of the power signals on the board so this other
version must be the improved version.
So please people check you mainboard and post the results so we can maybe come to a solution to
the USB problem that keeps surfacing on this bbs.

I'll be posting pictures as soon as I have more time for doing this.

Hrm,

I have a board with the U33 chip next to the TC12 fuse and I have USB crappiness, contrary to your hypothesis :( . To be fair, I can get USB up and running for a while (maybe 20 min?) but never for too long. I'm not sure if it helps but on the board is printed "2T02A". Perhaps that's a version number?

Mine has a green fuse beside USB connectors. and the USB is working fine as long as not in suspend mode (in linux, don't know in windowz). I bought it from boundless (ubid)

Peace
Pete

bummer, there goes my theory.
I told you chances were small.
Anyway, I'll wait for some other postings.

BTW: the stamps on the board are probably from quality checkings.
The version is in the white rectangle close to the mini-pci connector.
It is printed: M.B.T310 99120-1M 48.39H01.01M
On the other the M is two times N.
I hope that doesn't mean these boards are version 13 and 14 ;)

ON the board with the resister..........has anyone got a hard drive to work with this board? I have had no luck, and I do have the correct cable.

I have been able to get to suspend with something connected to the USB by disabling legacy USB support in the BIOS. With legacy on the machine would hang when trying to suspend. I'm using windows ME.

If you have "legacy" on in the bios, try turning it off. It MAY clear up some of the USB problems.

I have gotten a HD to work in one of mine with the R236, although now I just run off the DOC. I also am using a D-Link USB ethernet adapter DSB650 that works through several suspend-resume cycles as well as cold and warm reboots. I think I did have a small problem when trying to move lots of data, in that the transfer would stop for about 30 seconds, then continue for a couple minutes, then stop again for about 30 seconds. It never has a problem when browsing, using email or IM or playing mp3s.

Hi all. just back from vacation. I had a similar experience with turning off legacy support. no more lock-ups after suspend mode running Win98SE. I did have to install a fix for suspend mode too. I just got in another webplayer, I'll pull it apart to compare versions. My first conversion is on hold until the USB hub comes back from u-bid. The ethernet port died on it.

in response to getting a hdd to work, I had no problems (other than plugging in the cable wrong)

If by resistor, you mean the U33 chip, then yes, I'm having a problem using a HD too. Don't know that it's related though, but maybe...

The one webplayer that I have in active use displays some strange problems, and when opening it up, looks rather stange as far as how some things are soldered on. on the under side of the board under the second USB port, there is a bank of what looks like ferrites connected from the ground frame to what I think is a USB Power; these appear to be hand soldered. This usb port ( the second) is the only port that my USB mouse works on. when I connect the mouse to the other port, it disconnects, reconnects, disconnects, reconnects, disconnects, reconnects, disconnects, reconnects, disconnects, reconnects, disconnects, reconnects, disconnects, reconnects, disconnects, reconnects.. forever on the other hand, when my usb ethernet is connected to this port, everything is perfectly fine. when the ethernet is connected to the second port (the one that works with the mouse) I have to send data out on it every second or so (doing a ping will work) or it dies after the first large transfer.

I've got some pretty good pics of the two boards now if someone has a place to post them. I tried to get some closeups of the chip and the fuse on two different MB's.
