Hello

I just got a new Ethernet version. I've seen some posts about there being two versions of the main board. I was wondering if anyone has gotten the new Ethernet devices to boot from a HD and different OS.

I have not been able to do it. I have tried to remove the DOC but it still wont boot from the HD. I hear the HD spinning.

What's worse, I think I may have damamged the DOC now. I cant get it to boot from it.. It keeps trying to boot from the network.

Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

My ethernet version from ubid boots off the hard drive with no problems.
Give us more details about your machine and we can help.

Here's a few things you can check:
Did you adjust the BIOS settings to reognize the hard drive?
What operating system is on the hard drive?
Is the operating system already installed or are you setting it up now?
Did you set the primary partition on the hard drive to ACTIVE?
Is it FAT16 so DOS can read it?

I have the new Ethernet version from Ubid as well, and have had similiar problems.

1st. Heed the advice of aadam12: especially the part about setting the partition as ACTIVE, using fdisk. I wish I had that advice a week ago as I was pulling my hair out... In order to do this, I had to physically switch drives in my PC (using a rather inexpensive laptop HD adapter) to make the laptop HD Drive 1. That is the only way fdisk would let me set the partition to ACTIVE.

2nd. You have probably not damaged your DOC. If you removed the ethernet card and then booted, and then replaced the ethernet card, you always get the 'boot from network' option. You can configure the BIOS startup routine to look at your HD 1st.

Anyway, I'm learning lots as I go along, and will be happy to share all the details...

Thanks everyone... You would think that after working close to 7 years in the PC field, I would have remembered the basics... Heed this warning, moving to management can turn your brain to mush!

As it turns out, I did not change the bios. When I enabled IDE, It booted fine in DOS, but would not boot in any other OS. I had to change the OS type in the bios to Win95 for it to boot properly. As of now, I am in the final stages of the Win98 installation. I have already gotten a blue screen while trying to change the system time.
