Basic Questions
Some Basic Questions from someone looking into Buying A Webplayer

Hello all,

I just have some real basic questions about the webplayer.

Can the MiniPCI slot be converted into a PCI slot with a converter i've seen, plus adding a very short PCI right angle adapter to get the slot back on the right angle? This seems to be a bit taller than the case, but it looks to me as possilble without the case or a modified one.

Is the Compact Flash Slot useable once I solder a socket on? This could be useful to suplant the DiskOnChip2000. The idea there would to have a machine that can turboboot into an OS such as QNX or Embeded Linux.

Is the USB Supported under QNX and or Linux? or do you have to use Windows like most of the Webplayer owners seem to use. Oh Windows is fine, but I'd rather have a smaller OS footprint so I can do real work in the Flash. (Of course I'd have more with a bigger DOC or Compact Flash if that works)

How much is a replacement 48mb DOC2k and where can I purchase the range of these chips in qty 1?

Last question: Has anyone put external IDE devices on a Webplayer? This would invlove putting a socket on the outside of the case so you could plug and unplug the external ribbon cable (of course trying to keep the 18" limit in check.)

Thank you for any help you may provide.

Where did you see such?

>>Is the Compact Flash Slot useable once I solder a socket on?

No, I tried this. There are some necessary parts missing on the board.

try http://www.advantech.com/

>>Last question: Has anyone put external IDE devices on a Webplayer?

Yes somebody did. It should be on this forum. Try the search function to find it.

KRAY and others,

About that compact flash connector. Do you have any any idea what components are missing? Can they be added in order to have direct compact flash support?

I want to download pictures from my digital camera compact flash to WP. I purchased a USB compact flash reader which works fine on my desktop computer but the card reader power light will not even glow when it is connected to the WP. Needless to say, the WP doesn't recognize the card reader. My WP USB will support the Netgear EA101 EtherNet adapter that I use for the network so my WP USB is at least that functional.

My IDE is full up since I have a harddrive (Windows 98SE is the O.S.) and cd-rom in the WP therefor the IDE to compact flash solution won't work. Is it possible to do a floppy drive connector to compact flash adapter? If so...how to?

If it is only a lack of power to the USB, as some have suggested, can I tie some auxiliary power into a USB extension cord instead of investing in a powered USB hub?

Any ideas welcome.

Thanks

Jim

B the B,

I don't think any of those will do the job of connecting to a compact flash card.

The other problem is that the Mini-PCI is under the modem. (I need my modem for the occasional dial up when I am not on my home network)

Thanks for trying.

hmm i was refering to this part:
">>Can the MiniPCI slot be converted into a PCI slot with a converter i've seen
Where did you see such?"

Sorry. I'm not sure if that would work even.

Yes it works, but no ready available adapter has been seen until now. Two of us have tried this with live wiring.
The link above is an adapter in the wrong direction. It's to plug in a mini-pci card in pci slot.
