GOAL: A compreshensive listing of what (not) to buy

I have been searching and browsing through the posts here on getting WP Ethernet connectivity and it seems pretty hit-or-miss. I bought an Entrega 3U1E USB hub and Ethernet adapter (now basically an "obsolete" Intel item through a series of companies acquiring one another: Xircom -> PortGear -> Intel), but I cannot get it to work. I thought it would be helpful for all of us if a thread existed that was a compilation of success/fail stories.

If you respond (please!), please include exact make, model, and serial number if possible. This amount of detail may allow us to see some patterns in problems (provided enough people respond). In lieu of that amount of detail, I'd be happy to get whatever info you can offer. If anyone has some tips on the USB problems, that would be more than welcome as well. Thanks in advance to all who take the time to reply!

I'll start with mine:
WP: Refurbished w/ modem bought from uBid
Model:598-0013141 s/n:H0003A2889
Sticker above s/n label:9139H0100101201819M
sticker below: 2230-0202-8000, 03426691, H081001
(All the details I can give unless someone thinks the multitude of stickers inside are more helpful...)

Adapter: Entrega Technologies Hub 3U1E s/n:11940170606

What happened: Windows detected the hub and asked for drivers. Following instructions I found for PortGear, I let it install the default W98 driver for USB hubs (which the instructions said would be usbhub.sys, but it found usb.sys). Then I pointed it to the Enthernet driver I had DLed. The green link light was on, but it wanted to reboot for the driver install to finish. I rebooted & it was green again until Windoze was partially booted at which point the link light went red. It has never been green since.
