Does the Linksys model USB100M work with Webplayer?

I just picked up a modem version webplayer for 49.90 including shipping frin Ubid. I have the USB100M USB to ethernet but I am taking a big guess right now that it won't work. I am pretty sure i need that 3c19250 or that D link one. The 100M is very tiny and I don't think it has the Pegasus chip, but I don't know for sure. I am obviously new to this because I haven't even got mine yet. I appreciate your post everybody. (If anybody knows where i can get a 3c19250, i would be very gracious if you would let me know, thanks)

Any USB adapter that works in Win98 will work. Ofcourse you have to load the 98 image first.

If you are planning on using the system with the pre-installed slooooooow java based software then none of the usb adapters work.

Any USB network adapter will not work. The 3com 460 won't. I tried a Netgear although I don't remember the model number and had no luck. The dlink 650 works but will fail during a large transfer. The 3com 19250 works once it recognises - may take a few times pulling the usb cable inand out first. The best working usb network devices I have tried are the Diamond HPNA (home phoneline) network adapters. No issues whatsoever.

It varies from unit to unit. Try it.

Thats right i forgot about the USB compatibility problems.

Anyway, i tried the 3COM 3c19250 and Belkin USB 10/100 adapter. Both of them worked flawlessly.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate it. If it doesn't work then I will just use it on my sis's computer, she doesn't need 100 mbps LAN connection anyway.

As Ravi has said, it depends on the OS you have loaded, AND I have heard some people complain that certain version of the Webplayer don't have USB hardware which is 100%.

So those of you claiming that your USB adapters work, please say with which OS: 98-lite, Linux, or stuff that comes with the box.

Thanks!

I have both a Belden and a Compex fast USB ethernet adapters. One is under Win98 (Belden) and the Compex is running on WinME. Both failed under large xfers until I went into their property pages on the Advanced tab: I set test mode to 0 instead of the default 3, I set Media detect to Ethernet instead of Autosense, and I set the speed to 10 base T instead of autosense. Both NICs now work fine with my D-Link 704P router/switch. For the purests among you who think I should set the speed to 100 base T, remember that you can't pull anywhere near 100 meg thru a USB hole. 10 meg purrs along just fine. These setting were found from trial and error from many, many Windows restarts on Win98. I tried them on WinME and they worked fine there, also. By-the-by, the Compex is a cute little finger-sized thing that cost only $17.95 from Tech Depot (part of Office Depot.) The Belden cost more than twice as much from Circuit City. They both use the same driver (at least it is the same name.) When I get time, I will see if they are swappable on the two machines.

Currently, flow control is disabled. It was one of the many settings I changed. But, it was disabled as the default and I went back to 'disabled' before I found a combo of settings that worked.

For clarity, I will list them all, instead of just the ones I changed.

Flow Control Disable
Flow Ctrl Rx Size Disable
Flow Ctrl Tx Size Disable
Link Status Wakeup Enable
Magic Packet Enable
Media Type 10 Base T
Select Mode Ethernet
Test Mode Mode 0

I would not pretend this is the only combination that works or that it is the fastest. However, it does work reliably with the two LAN adapters mentioned above on the two OS I have. And since the whole idea was to give me access to a cable modem that runs at a piddly 1.1 megabits... Well, it does the job.

Pardon my spelling, also. What I said was a 'Belden' above is actually a Belkin USB/Ethernet adapter. OOPS

The name of the files in the driver set are: Net8511.inf, Net8511.cat and Net8511.sys. The applet used by the Compex and the Belkin to set properties are identical and I have them set to the above settings. If anyone comes up with more reliable or faster settings, let us know, here.

I should mention, here, that I do have a HP 8200 e USB CD writer on the system. It does change the computer's USB driver when it is installed in either (WinME or Win98) machine. I do not know if that has any effect on other USB adapters plugged into the computers. The modified USB driver is available free at the HP site for all their USB CD and DVD drives. It does not require the drives to install it and does not seem to affect adversely any of the other USB stuff I have plugged in.
Here it is for WinME
