This may, or may-not be related to the USB - network problems discussed in previous threads. I was transfering the embed98.img onto a 2.5" HD using two desktops and a 10base2 (shielded cable) ethernet network. The computer with the 2.5" drive would lock-up and freeze. This was during the 38 meg file transfer between the two computers. The 2.5" drive was master on the secondary IDE port. I then tried to transfer the file to a 3.5" Quantum Fireball, set as master on the primary IDE port. This worked smoothly. The computer >did not< freeze. I then transfered the file between the 3.5" drive and the 2.5" drive, on the same computer.

All of the discussion regarding USB/network problems during large file transfer focused on the USB port; power supply, capacitors, pcb traces etc. But a possible variable not considered, is the 2.5" drives. The 2.5" drive was not connected to a Webplayer or USB, and I still had problems with large file transfer. Maybe it's the drives, and not the USB?

I believe in the same theory about the large files thru network with the webplayer. I had a lot of problems trying to find a laptop hard drive that worked with my webplayer and, instead of using a 2.5 HD, Im using a 20gb Desktop Maxtor HD. Its not the nicest view but it worked. I downloaded a 38mb file (the Embedded Win98) from the Internet using my webplayer with a USB Diamond Multimedia HomePNA Phoneline adapter and it worked flawlessly, and I constantly transfer MP3s between my server and the webplayer without problems.

I think that there may be incompatibility issues between the webplayer and laptop hard drives. I don't know, probably the power. My hard drive is external(of course, doesnt fit inside) and Im using an external power suppy. Im also using a Targus USB Port Replicator who has its own power adapter. My USB HomePNA adapter and my USB mouse are attached to the replicator. I have no problems with neither of them so far. I think that probably the hard drives takes too much power from the webplayer and leave the other stuff without it.

Can anyone of you Gurus verify if our theory is correct?
