mini-pci Wireless Webplayer ?

I don't know if this has been covered before but I have found a Mini-pci card that "should" work in the webplayer, it's made by Lucent Orinoco and sold under the Dell OEM name. Dell sells the card for their Latitude notebooks which apparently have a built in antenna so the card doesn't come with an antenna, But I found and antenna which might work on eBay: http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2003528730

I have a card and MIG24WAVE antenna on it's way to me as I am trying it in one of my GCT's but I thought someone here might be interested in it too since the Webplayer's USB is so weak.

According to the seller of the MIG24WAVE antenna, it has a MC antenna connecter and from what I have been told. so does the Dell TrueMobile mini-pci card. I will let everyone know what the results are when I get them in.

Also the card sells on Dell's site for $85 plus $8 ground UPS shipping and the antenna on ebay has been going for $45 plus shipping.

I found Orinoco Dell mini-pci cards for $70 at http://www.tlab.net/~jungmann/cables/stuff.html I emailed the guy and he stated he had 10 left and told he would sell the lot for $550, I just bought one for $90 (from somewere else without looking around much), Dell has them marked down to $85

This card will fit in the GCT and most likely the WebPlayer, but I can confirm the WebPlayer but it's the same mini-pci slot. The drivers are available from the Dell website.

The Dell Truemobile wireless cards work great in the Webplayers. I installed one in a 98lite DOC only player and one on a Win ME hard disk unit. The only trick is that you must have access to the Win 98 or ME disks when you install since some PCI Bridge drivers are needed. You can download the wireless card drivers from Dell which include the Orinoco client manager.

I am using the Orinoco external ants with both units and get a great signal through-out the house. I removed the modem phone jacks and passed the ant cable through the hole -- works for now. I have ordered 2 of the MIG24WAVE ants which look like they would be a perfect solution if they actually have the correct connector.

Did you win the lottery BigD
It seems the guy you found provides an antenna. Should be enough for indoor usage. The MIG24WAV is an amplified antenna so you'll probably get better range.

I didn't get in on the lottery, but I do run my own lottery for all those bill collecters! Each month I throw all the bills into a big rotating clear ball and pull out one lucky winner!! (If a bill collecter calls and complains about not getting a payment then they automaticly get removed from the current months picking)

What type of antenna did the guy find? I bought a MIG24WAVE antenna and spliced it to the the connecter that can with the card, I took the anttena apart too, there is nothing to it; it's nothing but a cirucuit board with a circuit about a 1/4 inch wide. I planning on geting another card but I going to make my own anttena using Radio Shack's circuit board etching kit for $12, it comes with two copper plated circuit board plates which if cut in half would be enough for four antennas.

nice strategy for the bill collector ! I seemed to remember you'd changed jobs a few months ago.
Anyway, I'll buy one antenna from you for $10 if it works as well as the $45 one !

I was referring to the antenna shown on the picture on the website where the guy sells them for $70.

No job change here, but had a new addition to the family in December and got another tax break in for 2001!

Did he include an antenna at the $70 price or was it extra??

Good work !
I have yet to receive it (today or tomorrow) but he did say the pictured antenna was included. He did say it could be connected (to anothe antenna) in the Dell laptops, so it might not be much of an antenna !

The wire you see in the picture is not an antenna, it is an adapter cable to go from the card to the internal Dell notebook antenna. However, the end accepts the standard Lucent/Orinoco antennas and that is what is on the MIG24WAVE antenna. No need to do make any special adpaters or modifications to the card.

If you do not attach an antenna to the card and use only the cable in the picture, you will only get a very weak signal and only if with-in a few feet of the access point.

The cable that came with my card has a different connecter than the standard Lucent antenna connecter, my MIG24WAVE antenna would not connect to it and what I did was splice the cable togather.

Hi Bobm,

I am using the MIG24WAVE since they were designed to attach to the back of a laptop and work great when attached to the back of the Webplayer. They come with the correct Lucent/Orinoco type connector that connects to the short adapter cable that came with each of my 4 Truemobile cards. The ant will not connect directly to the card, so you end up with a short cable in the middle. I have 4 running this setup and it works great.

You will need an ant, the short adapter cable will not work as an ant, even a few feet from the access point.

I org used the Orinoco external self standing ants and they also work, however you have to stand them up next to the Webplayer and they take up space. I did notice much better reception with the Orinoco ants. The MIG24WAVE ants do not work nearly as well in my location. Both are aprox the same price and it just comes down to the MIG24WAVE making for a much nicer install.

I purchased 4 Truemobil card from http://www.tlab.net/~jungmann/cables/stuff.html via eBay and each of them came with the correct adapter cable. It sounds like others were not as lucky with the cards they received.

I purchased 4 MIG24WAVE ants from this person on eBay -- http://www.stores.ebay.com/id=34898716. He seems to allways have them listed.

Here is where I purchased the Orinoco external ant I mentioned -- http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2008375055. They allways have them listed also.

Good luck.

Does anybody know if the connector for the Orinoco antenna connector is a MC-CARD type, and if so have you been able to get a pigtail made for it?
