I just noticed linksys sells pci wireless cards (model WMP11) with an integrated mini pci card. Has anyone used this card succesfully with the webplayer ?
It seems pretty easy to rip the mini pci card off the pci card ;)

Enteresting...

I wonder if this would work better than the Dell Orinico card in the GCT's? I might try it but at the $90 to $110 price range, I would hate to be voiding the warrenty!

Were is the cheapest you have found them at??

Actually, what about D-link's DWL520 too? AND their new 5 Ghz DWL-A520 (Which looks very similer to the Linksys 2.4 ghz)

http://www.dlink.com/products/wireless/dwl520/

Unfortuntly, the Dlink DWL520 looks there isn't much under the RF cover in regards to a removeable mini-pci card. after downloading the hi-rez picture, the rf shield isn't very tall to allow a removable card.

Now the 5Ghz DWL-A520 looks like it might have some potential... :)

I must be crazy! I just went out and bought one; I have the outside shield off, the antenna lead de-soldered and the mini-pci card removed. As soon as I get it home (it's been a slow Monday at work) I will try it out in my GCT and report the results. The removed mini-pci card looks good, it has an RF shield on the card too, I don't believe I'm going to remove it to solder on a new antenna cable but it's not soldered on so I may take it off just to see what's under it.

FYI - I carefully desoldered the RF shield so that if it doesn't work out I will return it.. (I paid too much for it by not getting it off the internet and buying it here in town were I live).

I wonder if I can use the full size PCI card as an mini-pci adapter for any mini-pci card ??

I don`t have a big budget (don`t have any wlan equipment yet) so i`m just going to wait and see how well your mini pci card works ;)
At least this is a mainstream product anybody can order and not only oem`s ;)

So far so good, A lot better than the Dell 1150 Truemobile mini-pci. This one worked right away and connected to my RG-1100 access point; how I do have a problem with the network connection, I get an IP address from my DHCP server and then when it trys to load a web site it goes real slow. I am pretty sure I messed something up while trying to get the Dell card going as I did numerous reg edits and even found a beta of SP3 for Win2K which I loaded.

None the less, the D-Link drivers loaded and the hardware seems very happy, Used the included antenna and everything seems fine. I'm going to dump Win2K tomarrow and re-load XP Pro and see what happens.....

FYI - I have been told the the Dell Mini-Pci card works well in the WebPLayer, it doesn't seem to like the GCT's very much! ALSO the controller chip in the D-Link wireless card allows direct PCi to wireless controller unlike the Dell Orinoco which has a PCMCI controller and the wireless card appears to the PC as a device inserted into the PCMCIA slot. The Dlink card is detected by it's self with no other supporting "PCMCIA" devices.

Also, I might want to sell my Dell wireless mini-pci card....

Oops!

I believe I made a mistake, I accidently downloaded the drivers for the D-Link DWL-520 wireless adapter and they worked! I guess that answers the question about the D-Link PCI card; at least both adapters use the same controller chip!!

Tonight I will load the "right" LinkSys drivers and see what happens!!

That's the D-Link one, The Linksys WMP11 is the one that has the removable card, as I accidently found they both seem to have the same Intersil controller chips. http://www.intersil.com/cda/application/0,1239,23,00.html

I looked at Tiger, I couldn't find the WMP11....

FYI - The adapter works great in the GCT under WinXP Pro !! LinkSys has drivers and firmware updates for XP. It works great with my Orinoco RG1100 with encryption turned off, I couldn't get it to connect to a AP I have at work which is a Bay Network E-Mobility (Actually Symbol Spectrum24 AP) but the AP at work is wierd, I haven't been able to get it working with any other cards other than the e-Mobility cards we bought with it.

so do you use the stock antenna that came w/ the Linksys WMP11 Wireless PCI Network Card? If so, did you just connect it back to the connector after your mod the connector to the back of the unit?

Yes, I used the antenna that came with the card; all I added was some small coax cable to make the connection.

"TheBigdog ??", come on...... :)

BigDog,

Why would you need to add coaxial cable for the connection? According to the link, don't you basically just remove the connector from the card, mount it to the back of your WebPlayer, and then just use regular wire to connect between the connector and the MiniPCI card? Sorry I am just a bit confused, that's all.

Be careful, very careful before buying either the Linksys or the D-Link.

I first got the Linksys WMP11. I did see photos and pictures on the web of it having a mini-pci under the hood. However, when I soldered off the tin can... there was NO MINI-PCI card! It was all just soldered on the main PCB...
It must have been a new rev.

About the D-Link one: you'll need to buy the DWL-520+ (the one that does 22Mbps). The older DWL-520 (without the plus) has no mini-pci (although I'm not a 100% sure). I bought this one (DWL-520+) and it works great. Plus you get the antenna and connector with it. (Although some desoldering is needed for the connector).

TheBigDog...

The antenna base was soldered to the pcb of the normal regular size PCI card of the unmod'ed wireless card; I de-soldered that connector and soldered the coax to that connecter before mounting it in my case in a GCT but WebPlayer would be the same.

It made the whole setup look better including having a a RP-SMA antenna connector too.

Interesting about the non-removable card, I thought it seemed a little expensive to have it mounted in non-removable RF shield which contained a removable mini-pci card.... those little removable mini-pci sockets aren't cheap (on the grand scale of millions being manufactured.

The wicked thing that I thought of doing after I took mine apart was to put the RF shield back on without the card inside and take it back to get a refund claiming it was defective.

Baaaad dog....heehe

I bought a wmp11 too, but I checked under the shield before I desoldered the bugger. Took it back.

I think I have a source for some Cisco 350 minipci wifi cards. It's only the card. You still have
to get a pigtail and antenna.

Anybody know where I can get some cheap pigtails and antenna's?

I got a the cardless version also. I returned it and went for ebay. Some of the ones on Ebay are the old version. Ask them the following question... "Is there an empty J9 and J7 to the left of the card and is there a serial number written in WHITE to the right hand side of the card?" If both answers are YES, then u are looking at an old card (w/ mini-PCI inside) It worked for me and I am sure it will work for you. Better yet, send them a link to the picture of the card and they can for sure tell.

ok, w/ that said, I do have a questino for you guys...

Looking at

http://www.xkill.net/rcaslis/computers/EvilInsideMP3/MVC-004F.jpg

there are two wires connected, one is RED and one is BLACK. I THINK the RED is to the center pin of the mini RF connector, how about the BLACK? I am GUESSing that's a ground. But i am not sure. Can somebody help? If it is a ground, where should it be connected to?

I would say black as ground too, but as I assume it's a homemade external antenna connector, assuming that black is the ground; I see a problem.

The black wire should be covering the red ie.. it should be one coax cable rather than two seperate wires, without shielding the red wire, interference will be high. Sheild that puppy until you are ready to stick the antenna on, out the way of any interferance and it will work a lot better!

I just brought the WMP11 card today and found out that you can't remove the mini pci card anymore. The chips and everything is soldered onto the pci card...
