cheap USB ethernet adaptor $10 PGENET10

I just ordered a few of the PGENET10 USB ehternet adaptor. They seem to work fine with the webplayer. I did a few speed tests with my ISP. I was abple to sustain a 4Mb/s transfer of their 64 meg file. I did the test 4 times in a row. Considering my ISP speed cap is set to 20Mb/s Down and 1Mb/s Up. My PIII 900mHz PC gets about 7Mb/s.
The adaptor seems stable. I have the adaptor pluged directly in to the webplayer. The only thing I noticed was when I reboot the USB adaptor does not initialize correctly, requiring you to un plug and plug the USB connector. For $10 how canyou go wrong?

thanks for the link jayklm. Have you tried transfering large files locally between computers? It seems to me that's where most people have trouble w/.

Correction to my post :)

ISP is 10Mb/s down not 20!

Update: I transfered 500 Megs worth of mp3 on to the webplayer with no problem at all :)

Have you tried transfering one huge file though? most mp3s are ~4-5Mb and I think most people are ok w/ it. But the problem comes in when one tries to transfer an 80Mb file or something like that.

could you please test that and let me know?

Thank you.

:) I just did a test. I was able to transfer a 107MB zip file from my network to the webplay and I transferred the file back with no problems :)

So maybe this cheap USB adaptor is stable enough?

I also mounted the USB card in to the webplayer. The Ethernet port is a low profile jack so the height is just right. When I get home I will solder the thing in to place. I have the usb cable coming out of the small opening left by the Ethernet jack. Since I will be soldering I will move the Ethernet's Bi-color LED to the "Phone" LED and I will solder the "Mail" LED to the HD's connector. An LED for The network and HD is needed! I can’t hear the hard disk so I never know if the WP is locked up or processing.

I will get some photos posted this weekend.

Please do, this sure sounds interesting. I would like to see how all the things you have described are connected. I am totally glad to hear that something good and solid is in place for once.

The $10 PGENET10 works pretty good. I was playing internet radio on it for 12 hours. My original $30 Siemens 10/100 usb ethernet SpeedStream from Circuit City was unstable after 20 minutes.

Also you might want to turn off the automatic power management in the BIOS and Win98.

This unit is working ok for me. In fact, they are currently on sale for only $4.99 at Tiger Direct

I also have the PGENET10, and have x-fered some GPS maps that are over 500 megs without any problems across my network.
However, if I boot the WP with the adapter plugged in, it is NOT recognised and I have to unplug/plug it back in for it to be detected properly - I wouldn't make it internal for this reason.
It sleeps/awakes fine however from powersaving mode.

Rob10000, I have never had that problem. I soldered the wires to the USB1 trace on the motherboard directly (I also run Win ME) and everything works perfectly; NIC, sound, video, and USB.

JayKlm,

I have done the same...

So, what is the mapping for the PGENET10 wirecolor to WebPlayer usb solder joints???

(please save me from buying a new meter and testing it myself!)

Thanks,
Choadle

A tiny bit off-topic here... I just ordered a 3COM 3C460B 10/100 for 13 including shipping... will this work for my webplayer? Large file transfers and all.
