Here is the list of mods I did:

1. Toshiba 6Gig HD (3 partitions all formated FAT)
2. HD LED Replaced modem LED to be HD LED (pin 39 and 41 on HD connector)
3. USB ethernet adaptor installed. (Xircom PGENET10 soldered to WP's USB1)
4. Moved ethernet LED to "Mail" LED location

That is some great looking work...I just have a couple of questions as I am definetly not as knowledable.

1. Does the shielding on the USB cable get connected to the Motherboard at all (ground?)?
2. One of the pics of the wires for the lights notes 220 Ohm, what does this mean? Do I need any extra parts?
3. Lastly, did you drill through the USB/Ethernet board?

Ok one last request...If possible. Can you get images of the ethernet board from directly above and the USB connection from directly below.

I just received my USB Ethernet from Tiger and am anxious to try without frying my Ethernet or WebPlayer.

Thanks

A1: No I did not connect the shielding to ground. This should be done I guess :) I was worried about it shorting out so I opted to just trim it and tape it up :)

A2: A 220 Ohm resister is required. It limits the current to the LED. With out it you will kill the LED. Just go to radio shack and get a pack of 5 for for about $.35 ( http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&category%5Fname=CTLG%5F010%5F001%5F001%5F001&product%5Fid=900%2D0049 ). Make sure you insolate the resister with shrink tubing or electrical tape.

A3: Yes I did drill a hole on the ethernet adaptor.

I will try to get some detailed pictures of the adaptor up later tonight when I get home.

One more thing. the tigerdirect PGENET10 adaptor only draws 90mA :)

Great job! Thank you so much for the help. I am still awaiting my WebPlayer and HD. So far I have the Xircom and 44 connector cable. Chewing at the bit!

Thanks

jayklm, have you encountered any problems with the soldered ethernet adapter? I am debating whether or not to mount mine inside the box, but I want to do it all at once when I get my hard drive/cable/adapter... Do you have any problems with it being soldered in there?

I have not had any problems with the ethernet adaptor being installed. If you have not soldered before I would not attempt it. If you know how to solder, soldering 4 wires is easy. I have 2 pictures of the usb port with the adaptor soldered in to place. I would do it like this image:

http://mail.nycollege.edu/wp/usbsoldered2.html

The usb ethernet adaptor and wire facing the same way. do not do it this way:

http://mail.nycollege.edu/wp/usbsoldered.html

That was the first one I did. It still works but there would be more ware and tear on the solder joints when you install the adaptor. Also donot forget to insolate the adaptor and the exposed ground on the end of the usb cable. I use some thick clear water-proof packing tape(thats all I had laying around).

I also over cloced my 3rd WP to 266. I have not installed windows or linux yet to test it. I did let it sit at the WP's web brouser for a few hours with a CPU fan sitting on top of the heat sink. the WP did not lock up. I then cut a crude hole in the case to mount the fan. cloed the WP up and let it run for another 2 hours. The WP stayed cool. I got the power from the WP at the main filter cap (where the power is pluged in to the WP).

I've been trying to connect an LED to pins 39 and 41 (as you did) on my webplayer HD connector without success. The best I could get was LED indication of activity when I connected between pins 39 and 40 (ground). When connected like this the LED was very dim and the indication was the opposite of what you would normally expect--the LED would go out when there was disk activity and stay on when there was no activity.

Any ideas as to what I am doing wrong?? How did you specifically connect your LED (+ and - to which pins geographically--ie: 2nd & 3rd pins from the end closest to whatever)?? Did you have to add any circuitry to reverse the indication or did it just work the first time out??

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

here is my 44 pin header again:

http://167.206.153.222/wp/hdled3.jpg

on the right row of pins, 2nd and 3rd pin from the top on the filter cap side

I used the email LED red wire is + white is -

Pin 39 (DASP) goes to 0 with there is activity and goes to 1 where there is no activity.
Pin 41 is +5V.

So what happends is when both 41 and 39 are at 5V the LED is off. when 39 drops to 0 the LED goes on.

Thanks for the info. I hooked it up as you indicated and it works fine. I could have sworn I had done it that way the last time with different results. Anyway, all I fine now. Thank you for your help!!

Is this blank screen a blue blank screen?
If so, it's the system running scandisk. You are are not seeing the progress messages during scandisk because of some of your 'silent mode' settings are set in the BIOS. When set properly, you'll see the scandisk progress messages.

You can always try ESC or RETURN a few times to get out of scandisking a 6GB drive.

This is my guess.

Which LED requires the 220 Ohm resistor? Is it the network, HDD, or both?

I've tried most of the links on this board for pics of the inside Ethernet to USB wiring but most seem dead. Does anybody else have a good link to a pic of this? I got a few Xircom's from Tiger to install :) Thanks!

I tried to do the soldering mod for HD LED too. The capacitor is toooo close and my soldering iron is tooo thick. (6 or 7mm diameter) So I got creative and took a risk. I stripped out 2 wires from an unused IDE cable. Took a very small needle and poked a hole and the end. Sort of like this:

---------------.-

then I pushed pin 41 and 39 through the hole on each of the ide wires, making sure there are no shorts. (important!!!) then I pushed the IDE cable for the laptop as far down as I can on the pin and powered it up. It worked!!! The tiny gap due to the 2 ide wires wasn't big enough to cause any problems. Thought I would share this trick as those pins are almost impossible to solder.

Happy modding everyone.

-boosted
ps. I take no responsibility if you short out the wires and fry your HD or MB, try this at your own risk!
