problem booting from harddrive - screen full of '$'

I've tried various settings and can't get it to see the hard drive and won't boot.
it files the screen with dollar signs, a few pices of lines get overwritten with other garbage characters
and that's it. I've enabled the primary IDE etc. I tried setting the drive to "user" and entering
the numbers, no go.

just now I tried removing the DOC chip. it still doesn't even see a hard drive attached.
any ideas? the drive boots to DOS fine on another machine.

If I remember correctly, the screen full of '$' appeared when I set the Webplayer in "diagnostic" mode under the original OS. After a very long wait, that Virgin logon screen finally appeared.

Can you tell us more about your BIOS settings? Here are some quick notes on the BIOS settings which you may or may not have:

-To get into the bios, unplug your webplayer and plug it back in.
-While your webplayer boots up, press F2 (the second key to the right of esc) until you
get into the bios.
-You will be asked for a password, it is schwasck
-Under the "Main" tab, set the primary master to "auto".
-Then, under the "Advanced" tab, Change "installed O/S" to win95,
and "Large disk access" to DOS.
-Then go to "I/O device Configuration" and change "Local bus IDE adapter" to primary.

Can you type in CLS to clear the screen and get the C: dos prompt?

Hopefully with some more info, we can help you.

I've tried all that except O/S to Win95. I thing is that the drive doesn't even show up in the
setup screen. and the drive is good, it boots up on another machine. I also tried a different
laptop drive and it didn't show up in the setup screen either.
Thanks for your help.

Hmmm... How about HARD DISK PRE-DELAY set to ENABLED ? Other than that, maybe there is break or short in the drive cable. I also assume that there are no jumpers on the drive's Master/Slave/CSEL pins. But that doesn't explain the '$' business.

If you boot up without the drive, what do see?

Also what kind of drives are you using?

I remember when I was "re-purposing" my webplayer, before I got the bios settings right and before I got the hard drive connected to the cable in the correct direction , the $'s would show up when booting the original boundless image from the DOC if I set the bios so that "silent boot" (I think it was called) is disabled, that is what it would do, and then eventually it would show the log in screen. So somehow your webplayer isn't detecting the drive...but I haven't a clue why...

what an idiot!! I knew it had to be something simple.
After trying more bios settings etc I got to the point where
I was going to try another cable. so I looked around for
another laptop cable and it was a cable I made for the
IOpener and GCT (Gateway Touchpad) and I went Bing!
of course! the cable I was using had the wires crossed
for use on the IO or GCT. I hadn't noticed it because
the cable had the wires sliced lengthwise and I thought
it was just to make the cable easier to twist around.

D'Oh! anyway I'm just happy I found it. it's installing
windows on it now. maybe later I'll make it dual boot between
Linux and Win98. thanks for your help.

Conincidentally, I just encountered this same problem. I tried four separate IBM HD's (e.g. IBM-H2258-A3) and all experienced the same problem. All four power up so they appear to be correctly connected. All are bootable and are recognized by my desktop machine.

In the BIOS Boot options/silent boot is disabled and Advanced/I-O Device/IDE Bus is set to Primary. With three other WPs this has been sufficient, although I've never used the IBMs before. I am at a complete loss as to why this is happening.

Does anyone have any hints?

I had some problems with a few HDs. I found that the boot sector of those HDs were not "Standard" -- at least as reported by Ranish. I picked up a freeware low-level HD format program and reformated the HDs, boot sector and all.

After that, the HD worked (and has worked) like a champ.

I don't know if this is the problem you are suffering from (sounds like it, though), but it wouldn't hurst to check.

Thanks. Because I could connect the HD with my desktop I figured it must be a bad cable. I therefore shelled out another $15 for a cable only to find out it was the HD. Someone posted the solution for attaching IBM HDs. Unfortunately I'd already purchased a non-IBM HD even though I'd already bought a sack of the IBM HD's from Ebay.
