On a whim, I decided to try changing the USB ohci driver from Compaq OpenHCI USB to Generic OpenHCI USB and it seems to have made my sddr-31 stable. I don't have a USB ethernet to test this with, but I would be interested to know if this fixes the problem for anyone and I might try one. Thanks.

What kernel verson are you using? I can't seem to find a generic driver in 2.4.19-pre10. Is it under the normal USB section?

Sorry! My post was incomplete: this is for windows 98 SE. Actually I have no problems with it using FreeBSD's usb drivers. I have not tried linux.
