I think it's scandisk running. You'll have to get into the BIOS again and set the BOOT OPTIONS to see the scandisk messages on the screen.
Here are my settings:
MAIN->BOOT OPTIONS->

Silent Boot = Disable
Quick Boot Mode = Enable
Summary Screen = Disable
Hard Disk Pre = Disable

So the next time when Windows98 is not shutdown properly (like just pulling the plug on the WP) you'll see the nice scandisk messages on the next power up.

Let us know if this works for you.

i'll give that a shot but what i did in the meantime was to run setup with the /is switch. this bypassed scandisk and went straight to set up. so far so good

Install went fine. Blue screened after applying time zone but rebooted and all was fine. Sees DOC as drive D: so i formatted it and tried to put the swap file on it but that seemed to cause problems so i put it back on C:.

Why does my computer show an A: drive with the removeable drive icon?

Why is A: and D: run in compatability mode?

No Sound just clicks.

I took a hardrive from an old toshiba notebook computer and hooked it ot the mb. I changed the bios and when it tried ot boot from the HD it just filled the screen with a buch of $#@ symbols and then after a bit went into the proprietary software. Any idea how to get the hd to continue on into windows? Thanks

Fulmitz

Fulmitz your seeing those symbols because you enabled summary screen I beleive.

I did the same thing and it freaked me out at first.

You missing something in our bios still. The other guys can probably help you more on that though.

Just started work on mine.

there's something in the bios about a read mode or somethign like that that has to be set to "DOS" and also, set the installed OS option to "Win95". that was my problem when i did mine yesterday.

I'm going crazy, this makes no sense,

I've set up my wp with no problem by doing the following:
format drive (Fujitsu mhf2043at)
make bootable and copy win98 folder
boot up and run setup

I am now setting up another hard drive(Fujitsu mhf2040at) but using the same wp. Following the same procedure as above but now after initial set-up, upon first reboot it just hangs on a flashing cursor. i've tried fdisking and rewriting MBR. Nothing works.

The only problem i can possibly see is that the first drive was prepared using a 40 to 44 pin IDE cable and the second using a usb adapter.

I just don't get it. Can anyone shed some light on this stupid problem?

Mine is a slightly wierder problem -- I have the drive booting and I can start the setup /is /im to skip memory and scandisk check. However, the setup stops with an "insert disk in drive B" message during disk space check. I can't for the life of me use a switch combination to bypass the disk B check! Email or post here is fine -- your call...
