Does anyone know anything about this mini-pci slot?

What kind of cards can be put in here?

I believe 3-com, Compaq and IBM make networking/56K modem cards in the mini-pci form, but they are pretty pricey.

http://www.provantage.com/PR_53126.HTM and http://www.3com.com/mobile/pccards/3cn3ac1556bfb.html.

I don't see any connectors for it though.

you can go one way:
http://www.catalyst-ent.com/Products/Adapters/minipci/minipci3.htm

Anyone up for trying to make it go the other? (oh how I want to stick a DVD decoder in there)

IBM uses the MiniPCI slot in the A20 and X20 laptops. If you're willing to shell out almost $200, you can get the Intel or 3com 10/100 + 56k combo MiniPCI card from them. The part numbers are 08K3124 and 09N9774, respectively. The problem with these cards is that the connector that actually provides the ethernet and modem external connectors is not included, but it shouldn't be that hard to figure out. From the picture, it looks like it has two connectors, one is two pins, the other is eight. Hmmm.. wonder which is which! :) Finding the plug to attach it will be the biggest problem. Anyone have an A20 or X20 Thinkpad that could figure this out??

I found this URL in a laptop newsgroup, perhaps one of these would work in the Webplayer.

Try this link:

http://shopper.cnet.com/shopping/search/results/1,10214,0-1257,00.html?tag=srch&qt=mini+pci&cn=&ca=1257

You will find multiple vendors selling Xircom, 3Com and Intel mPCI combo cards.

Ask and ye shall recieve:

Look under "adapters"
(of course, you still have to figure out how to fit a PCI car in there physically, among the other components -- but if you plan on putting a DVD in this thing, I'm guessing you don't intend to work in a closed, unmodified case anyway.)

I hope this helps.

The Catalyst catalog does not list anything that will fit in the Webplayer. However, if anyone makes such a product any time soon, Catalyst would be a top contender. Keep an eye on them.

The Webplayer has a mini-PCI type III slot, but many miniPCI cards don't specify Type I, II, or III. Mini-PCI is *very* different from Compact PCI, etc. It's pin compatible with micro-PCI, but won't fit the socket (Micro-PCI modules are sometimes soldered onto a slot card to make a mini-PCI card]

Unlike PCMCIA, Type I and II are *NOT* compatible with Type III - totally different slots and even form factors. See the URL below for more info.

http://www.dell.com/us/en/gen/topics/vectors_1999-minipci.htm

I should also note based on my measurements of photographs of the motherboard (using the slot width as a calibration) The Webplayer should handle any Type III card. (i.e. Type IIIA and Type IIIB cards, which are identical except for the "height" above the slot socket. <50mm vs <60mm)

As far as I have been able to determine from researching mini-PCI suppliers, the only non-proprietary mini-PCI cards in production at present are modem, LAN, or combo cards.

Has anyone checked out the Wireless card? That would make this a pretty nimble little device. Wonder how much they cost.
Got any questions or comments

Say,

Does anyone know for sure that a Mini-PCI card will work in there OK? I am thinking of buying a wireless card from ORINOCO (Wavelan). I just want to be sure that the slot actually works before I get some.

I don't about it working or not. I guess it is fully functional but I'm still working on that issue.
Be sure you get a mini-PCI III card! Other mini-pci's will not fit.

has anyone found a place to order these? I would be interested in getting several, but I called orinoco and they said that they only sell to OEM's. They gave me a number for a place that delivers to the OEM's. its (770) 446-4719. I haven't called yet. If anyone finds a way to get these, let me know.

I could probably get them. I have a dealers license, and work for a conglomerate company.

I will try if you get me the contact info. I want to try them.

ANYONE INTERESTED LET ME KNOW - THe higher the count, the more real it will seem.

I will say it is for a pilot project that may go into production.

Can you send me the phone number that you got for them at the OEM side?

That phone number is the only contact information that I have. I called
For sales & pre-sales support:
Call 1-866-orinoco
and they gave me this number: (770) 446-4719
I'm not sure how many I would need. If they work well, and I can get more webplayers, I would want up to 20. We are setting up a job tracking system and this would be a good solution. It would be helpful if we could first get a single card and be able to test and make sure it works. I think most of the antenna's are built into the laptops. Since the webplayer wasn't built for this it doesn't have a built in antenna. I'm sure there is a way around this though.

I read somewhere that they were selling them for $70 in production run amounts. So.. I don't really know what that means we could get them for.

Count me in for one! What i wonder is that, if its wireless, do we also need to pay an ungodly sum for a base recieving unit as well? I didn't see that included with the price.

yes, you would need an access point, right now buy.com has them for under $200. I've used the d-link and if you are on a DHCP network, it is very easy to setup.

I am back, and here is the scoop.

I will be able to order these. In fact, we may all be able to order at our leisure. I have found that these may be available at a distributor. They list at $200 or so I was told by a rep, and at a vendor we should see pricing less. I will post back what I find out, then see what else I can find out. I just wanted to make sure you guys did not think I disappeared.

cool, hopefully we can get one and test it first. I'm still unsure about how we would connect an antenna. But i'm sure we could figure it out. This thread is also getting kinda long, you might want to start a new one. Please keep us updated. Thanks

I'm getting closer in revealing the pin-out of the mini-pci connector.
My goal is to make an adapter to a normal pci slot so cheap pci cards can be used
in stead of the horrible expensive mini-pci cards.

BUT: I'm in need of more info concerning the mini-pci connections.
Has anybody already have a mini-pci card? Please mail me some quality pictures or put them online somewhere so
I can figure out the pin-out.

It seems that the mini-pci is quite pin-compatible with the pci-slot,
but I need more info to be sure. I have some pins found connected to +3V which are connected to ground on the pci-slot

So any info is usefull. I will put everything I have until now online asap. That'll be tonight I hope.
I have a photo of a mini-pci slot to pci-card and that was very usefull, but I only have the picture on one side and they don't
have an adapter the other way.
