HDD in antistatic bag-is this a prob?
HDD in antistatic bag-is this a prob?

I have a HDD hooked up to my webplayer and I stuck in the anti-static bag to insulate it so it wouldn't come in contact with mobo, am I going to overheat it or suffocate it?

yikes! i think the idea with the anti-static bags is that they conduct electricity. I guess it's the same as wrapping stuff in tin foil. it'd prolly be a good idea to swap that out for somethign else... correct me if i'm wrong.

If it's one of the silver-looking bags, it has a metallic inner layer coated with a plastic layer on each side. This is so the bag can't conduct electricity. However, if the outer layer gets cracked, punctured or otherwise damaged things can come in contact with the metallic inner layer and short out.

If it's one of the pink ones, it's semi-conductive inside and out and is also not a good idea to use.

When I did my HD in the WP, I cut a sheet of heavy 'report cover' plastic to the outline of the drive on the top and bottom and mounted the plastic using double backed tape. No problems after over a year of use, including traveling and other rough handling....

I took an Ohm meter and couldn't measure any resistance or shorts inside, outside, through my mylar bags (silvery-smoke tinted). Next, I took an insulation meter which "shot" 500 volts through a bag. Nothing registered and the bag did not catch on fire :) Maybe I'm just lucky. Maybe the bag was chemically treated? I should probably try some other material just to be safe. Is there an ESD engineer online to advise us? Your mileage may vary....

They do conduct, that is what makes them anti-static.
BUT, they have a relatively high impedance so you don't have to worry about shorting anything. I would be more concerned about heat build up.
