| I am not that familiar with how well Linux is compatible with a DOC, so I don't know if this is any help, but in FreeBSD there is a device fla0 that will allow directly mounting the DOC (not the image of the DOC) and you can use it like a regular device mounting it as msdos, ext, or ufs as appropriate. I suspect the "image" that getmdoc creates is not a standard format, as it prints info about storing the boot files and then the image, instead of just copying the device as an image.
