Hard drive will not spin up or power at all....

HELP!

I've been trying for a week now to get my WP up and running on Win98. I have the files to flash the DOC on a DOS bootable hard drive, ready to flash, but the WP will not even power up my HD.

I've tried 3 hard drives (Seagate ST9546A, Seagate ST9420AG, and IBM Travelstar DARA-218000), and the same thing happens every time. I know I have pin 1 correct on both sides with the red stripe on pin 1, but I have even tried every permutation possible with all the drives.

I tested voltage: Pin 42 to pos, Pin 43 neg = 3.33V. I tested Pin 41 to pos, Pin 43 neg = 3.33V.
Just to try, I tested Pin 2 neg, Pin 3 pos = 4.44V. Also Pin 2 neg, Pin 5 pos = 4.44V.

I'm using a 44 pin cable that I bought from Bad Flash that is said to work specifically for the WP.

My WP is from Boundless, which I got from Ubid, though it does say Virgin on the cover. I've done some research, and my MB does indeed have the U33 and the R236.

It boots fine into the Virgin web service, but of course I have not tried to connect to it...

Am I going crazy????

Maybe it's a defective cable??
Using an Ohmmeter, have you tried detecting an open wire between each end of the cable?
Have you tried that cable in a laptop?

Otherwise, I'm baffled.

I've got a digital multimeter, but I'm not very good at this stuff... How do I check the open wire?

Yes, all 3 drives work perfectly in a laptop, but the use proprietary Dell adapters, so I cannot test the cable.

Besides, these readings appear to be the same when tested through the cable or direct to the WP.

I had the same problem. I flipped the cable over (red stripe opposite pin 1) and it worked fine.

Did you flip the cable on the WebPlayer side or the hard drive side?

Careful about flipping the cable! It's a good way to fry your hd!

I had a WebPlayer (1 out of 14 I have worked with) that had the same trouble. Various cables and HD's made no difference at all. My solution was to program the DOC with WIN98 Lite on another WebPlayer, then transfer the working DOC back to the stubborn WebPlayer.

Worked like a charm. Nothing else would work at all.

Now did that stubborn WebPlayer have the U33 and/or R236? Maybe there's something to that....
