144MB DOC's Availiable

I was searching around on the web at excess electronic component sites and came up with this find. There is a guy named Dave at Rose Electronics in FL with 12, surplus 144MB DOCs for sale if you buy all 12. He originally said $400 each but I told him forget it I could get the on E-Bay for less than $70. Well he called back and said he could do better than that. How much I don't know. I left it at that since I don't have that kind of money right now. His number is 866-275-7673.

Just make sure they are the right voltage. What is the right voltage for the WP 3v or 5v. I think the part number is MD220x-D144 for the 5v (x is the package size) and MD220x-D144-30 for the 3v, see "http://www.m-sys.com/content/products/product.asp?PID=2&FILE=doc2k&FAM=doc" for the specs. So if you got the cash i'll buy one off of you.

PS. He says he couldn't find them on ebay, so make your best deal.

I purchased one of these DOCs off eBay and installed it in my Webplayer. I used the image that was created for this DOC that's been posted on this site and everything seems to work fine. I even had enough space on the DOC to install software for a USB Iomega drive so that I had someway to transfer files to and from the Webplayer. The 144MB DOC is thicker than the original so you have to leave the cover off, no big deal. I'll look at the DOC and post what information I find about it here (number, voltage, etc).

I don't know anything about the vendor mentioned here. Thought someone might be interested in someone who has one of these DOCs.

The one I used for creating the image is a MD2201-D144 which is a 5v part.

Thanks for the information about your 144mb DOC. I do see some DOC's on ebay for $40 initial price with $8 s/h. Is it a good price for them? Also, what did you mean by saying 'you have to leave the cover off'? Which cover are you talking about, the bottom cover of the case? What will protect the insides then?

Thanks,
Hari

You only need to leave the small cover for the DOC off (about 2"x1", which removes with a small torex driver.)

I purchased a 144mb doc (m-systems) from ebay a few days back and today opened my WP to install it. Unfortunately the doc turned out to be a little too thick and there is nothing to unscrew from it as jpe_dty suggested earlier, as it is just a single block. If I have to install the chip as it is, I would have to force a couple of screws at the front side and the motherboard would then form an arch. I am wondering if anyone else faced this problem and tried to solve it. Is it ok if I force the screws resulting in a stress on the motherboard? I would appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks a lot,
Hari

I just left the little door OFF. WHile the DOC sticks out below the bottom of the case, it is out no further than the units rubber feet.

I could not find a good picture of the door from the bottom, but here is a pic from the top: http://www.techdose.com/projects/Webplayer/chassisbottom.jpg the door you want to remove is the inch by two inch rectangle at the bottom of the picture just right of center.

Thanks to you guys, I could reassemble everything now. I didn't even realize that there is a door at the bottom, though I observed it be different on the inside of the bottom cover below the doc. I installed the w98 full version image shared kindly by jpe_dty but found that only 2.5mb was free instead of 45mb as was said in this posting:

http://www.linux-hacker.net/cgi-bin/UltraBoard/UltraBoard.pl?Action=ShowPost&Board=vwgeneral&Post=798&Idle=0&Sort=0&Order=Descend&Page=0&Session=hari.104563839537518

I have used the docutils found at the same place to flash DOC. Have I done something wrong? It also seems that there are some drivers missing in this image. I still have to observe if the stability is better than using harddisk alone (which is my mail intention of getting this). I think I also need to get a powered USB adapter to reduce the burden of the ethernet card on the WP.

Thanks a lot,
Hari

The image was taken off a working system with all drivers installed and about 45MB free. I am uncertain why it would be behaving differently - unless there is more than one type of webplayer out there - does anyone know?

Actually there is 2 types that i know of. The Tech version which I just got and the retail one. But the only difference I see in the Tech version is that it has the connectors for things like the floppy and com port and so on. Besides that hardware seems the same.

I may be looking at wrong information here. On C drive it says Used space is 281mb and Free space is 52mb. On Host for C drive (H:), the corresponding numbers are 138mb and 2.26mb. I am confused about these numbers. I have 128mb ram. I have the impression that the drive c: is actually in memory, so how can that be so huge? Is it showing the uncompressed size for both used and free space? Does that really mean I have 52mb more space? I am not familiar with how drivespace works, so I apologize if my questions look silly.

Thank you,
Hari

Yes you have 52meg free. Drivespace compression needs a certain amount of space for files that cannot be compressed, that is the H drive. Basically just pretend that the H drive doesnt exist and go by what is on the C drive and you will be ok.
