It is possible to install XP without having to upgrade from 98. (Using a hard drive of course). Here is the procedure:
From an XP machine with your wp hard drive connected,
From the install cd run the winnt32 command with the following 2 switches:
/syspart:x /tempdrive:x (where x is the wp drive). This will copy the setup files to the drive and mark the partition active and bootable.
on one of the first setup screens(i forget which one, i should have took notes while i was doing it)there is an advanced button, click it and check the box that says "copy all install files from cd:
follow the rest of the the setup. your machine will reboot when completed. then disconnect the drive, hook up to your WP.
power up and enter BIOS.
under the "Advanced" tab, Change "installed O/S" to other,
and "Large disk access" to other
reboot and the install begins.
NOW, here is the issue. XP installs fine, takes about 2 hours but there are many missing drivers which i have scoured the internet for and not found. I was able to find a driver for the modem but nothing for video(even thought the default works fine), no audio and some other stuff.
Also it seems to be a little too slow for my taste even though i have installed 256mg RAM.
SO, bottom line. I just don't think it's worth it. I'm going back to the tried and true Win 98.
Maybe i'll try ME.
