Winsdoes CE on DOC anyone try it?

I am wondering if anyone has tried this.

I figure since it contains a small browser and other things we want on there already, it may be a good thing to try.Its also meant for low speed cpu, and solid disk systems.

Seems like a good way to go on the DOC.

Has anyone tried it? I could not find any threads on it.

Is it worth it or even possible?

I have 98 lite on mine already, but am looking for something a bit faster or more functionality on the DOC.

By the way, sorry for the topic spelling. My fingers do not want to type today, and I did not catch it till it was posted.

No, Windows CE will not work... Unless I'm mistaken, I don't think that
there is a version of CE that runs on X-86 proscessors. They're all designed
for MIPS, Strong-ARM, and Hitachi Chips. If you want a faster OS, your best bet is either
M$DOS or Linux :)

Thanks.

I did not even think about the CPU.

I know it would work on teh DOC.

Damn, I think that would have been nice.

I even looked at Be, which probvably would have worked had it not been for the USB modem.

Again, Thanks.

Actually, I believe Windows CE is on the MSN Companion internet appliances, which have i386 compatible processors. I received an emachines MSN Companion with what appeared to be windows CE on it. I promptly erased it and put freebsd on it, though.

Would I be wasting my time thinking that QNX would be a good operating system on the Webplayer? (I'm trying to figure out a QNX install but its about a level and half above my current knowledge.)

See, I notice that on the Audrey formum, they have done great thinks with a QNX OS, and that QNX is targetted for embedded systems.

So, my point is, am I wasting my time thinking QNX, or would it be a faster os for the webplayer?

Qnx is a good OS, and maybe it's worth trying... but it seems way over
my head. I almost bought an audrey, (they're pretty cheap). If I was going
to learn QNX though, I'd learn it on an audrey, which is more supported as far
as QNX goes. It's the -official- OS of the audrey, while most people who hack
webplayers use either windoes or linux. I don't know how many programs you would be able to find for x86-QNX, and programming is way over my head. But if you feel like getting into QNX, more power too ya! let us know how it goes. It does sound interesting.

Windows CE will work fine.

In fact, the latest version of Windows CE (CE.NET or 4.0) has a config for National's GEODE CPU's on the demo CD! This is the 90 day eval version of the full blown CE development kit, which includes the Builder too.

I've built CE images for NSC's GEODE GX chips. So get the CE kit from MS and have at it! You'll need at least a Win2K (or better) machine to be able to build CE images though...

I just downloaded an evaluation WinCE4 from the microsoft website.

Its interesteing to play with, but the Webplayer specific modules arent included with this evaluation release.

The concept of CE on the webplayer definately looks a way to go since the CE OS can have a CE version of IE5.5, full CE mediaplayer for playing MP3s and numerous other apps, all with minimal footprint and minimal ,memory requirements.

Just need more help when playing with CE Builder.

Anyone know what they are dooing with this?

Cheers, Vin

I am still figuring this whole thing out, but i will see what I can find.

One big problem possibly is the USB nic..

Can WinCe run standard windows drivers?

It also looks like the I-Opener pci hack works for my Nic, but I wonder if it will work in Ce..

Many questions. Few answers yet.
Luckily its easy to back up my current image I guess...

Anyone have anything they can add?
More questions, things to watch out for, answes, tips, etc..

IF (big if) I can do it I will post the Doc image..somewhere.

Looks like getting ahold of a WinCe Platform Builder 3.0 is going to be a lot harder than expected.

If anyone has any leads let me know.

CE .net is a definate no go. They want 128megs ram, and a 266 P2 cpu to run it.

Sure those requirements are to RUN CE.NET? Sounds to me like that is what you need to build an image. I would love to get a CE image...but I think it is beyond my skills. If someone would post one somewhere it would make me do this

Yep, those are for CE 4.0 (or CE .net). The "next generation of handhelds". Crazy.

I am pretty sure I could get 3.0 to work though. Its rquirements are much lower.

Its just a matter of finding the Platform Builder. Which you need to do it.

By the way, I could swear I remember seeing somewhere M$ was going to give CE away, and I did see that a 30 day eval of Platform Builder is available, but you have to get it from an "authorized dealer", in which case they want you do order it on a CD.

I've got the 3.0 PB. There are a couple different things, the emulator and the visual tools. The emulator was free, the Visual tools required me to register and get a cd key. I think they are both 120 trials. Both of the files are over 300 megs and I can't host. I made an NK.bin file OS image but didn't get anywhere. If anyone has a half gig of webhosting space and wants to redistribute some MS stuff email me at jack08180@hotmail.com . I guess that the emulator, since it does NOT require a CD key really is legal to repost isn't it? The Visual tools is registered to ME so your not gonna get it ( sorry all ) but I don't think that it is necessary. When I get a free minute, I will re install the emulator and see if that is the program that makes the NK.bin. Got to warn you, you have to have win2k or Xp and a STRONG machine (800 minimum, I'd say over a gig. I had a 1.4 and it was a lil pokey) BTW, my Ce image with media player and ie 5.5 was under 25 megs, so its just about perfect for this

The 266 mhz / 128 meg requirements are for the development PC. WinCE .NET 4.2 claims to support a 486 DX2-66.

I've been playing with the Emulator version off the MS website, but it doesn't come with the Geode files. I ordered the evaluation DVD, so hopefully I'll get it soon. The thing I'm not too sure about is the ethernet drivers. I don't think any USB -> ethernet or minipci -> ethernet drivers exist. If anyone knows of some, can you point me in the right direction?

Thanks
