Webpayer power supply too weak!
Webplayer power supply too weak.

Definately a power problem with the supplied
webplayer AC to DC convertor.
5V at 5A is not enough.

While I was uploading office 2000 from another
Computer on the network (using USB Lynksys 100M)
it hung the computer
about 1/4 the way thru it. Also when
I plug in the USB mouse nether would work.
Is that what everyone is seeing?

Since I saw some posts about possible power supply
Weaknesses, I tried a spare computer power supply
I had and used the connector that I cut from
the webplayer.
This is 5V at 20A max, whereas
the webplayer supply is only 5V at 5A max.
With this setup I was able to install
office 2000 without a problem. About an hour over
the network.

I think if you splice two webplayer supplies together
In parallel it would work fine as well. (5V at 10A max).
Make sure red with white wires and
black with black wires.

Hmm.. interesting...
I think there may be a problem with the controller also though. I tried an external powered hub and still got lockups, just not as often. I can get multiple devices to work that way though (like 2 controllers, mouse, and NIC)

Sounds like it may be worth putting a voltmeter between the nic and system and see if it drops.

I will try it with one of mine if anyone is interested. It may be tough to catch the drop even if it exists..

Then again, it may simply be under-volted all the time. I'll try it tonight.

This could explain a lot really, but considering they were not meant for what we have done, its not entirely unlikely.

I just picked up an 250W AT PS for $5 in a clearance bin. Now I need to find a connecter that fits the webplayer. I was hoping it was the standard one used on the NES, Genesis, etc. But, it's not. (I don't want to cut my stock PSU cable).
Anyway, this one puts out 25A for the +5VDC! That should be enough. I am thinking of making a docking station somehow, (now I have 12VDC also!) with a power switch, maybe CD ROM, floppy, etc.

Damn I was working on that (well, something similar).

Just did not want to give it away.

Anyhow, I did not get to test the 5volt line last night as I was setting up a second webplayer.

However... One only has a usb nic, the other had a Nic and stock modem.

The power supply on the one with both was extremely hot, while the other was merely warm. So I do think we are on theright track, as people running a HD off this power supply are really taxing it.

whoa splicing 2 power supplies together? Would that work? This is on a different project. I have 2 power adapters (those wall brick kind) each putting out 1A, but I need 2A of power. I thought about soldering the + of each power adapter's togher and the - together. Hence 2 power adapter in parallel. But I was afraid I might blow something up. I know with batteries I can do this, but I wasn't sure about power adapters. Will that work?

Surprise!!!!

The WP power supply is not putting out too little voltage..
Its putting out to much!

While running it, it usually sat at 5.3 volts. However a few spikes went a bit higher. When it reached 5.4-5.5 volts, I lost my net connection. I noticed on large transfers it will occasionally slowly rise up. Teh Power supply is putting out 5.4 with no load.

Some nics are obviously more fault tolerant on this.

May also explain why these run so hot. Since who knows how much of the system is over volting. If I can get Motherboard Monitor to work on here in the near future (I doubt it will pick anything up), maybe that will give us some more info.

I checked on my main system to verify I was testing the right way, and if my voltmeter was off, it was perfect at 5 volts.

By the way, Boosted, That should work, but I am no electronics expert.

anyone know what size the power connector is? I would like to pick up a duplicate
at Radio Shack or Digi-Key and wire it up to a spare AT power supply.
Thanks.

Any way you look at it, it seems we have a PSU problem that's causing the fault. Seems like there's at least four of us now wiring up AT power supplies. I think I'll paint mone and put a window in it (to match my webplayer)

Well, got my connector, hooked everything up and no lockups yet. My MS optical mouse even works now, with the NIC with no lockups (My wingman controllers still wont work without external power though). Plus, now I have a power switch and 12V.. Hmmm.. the possibilities...

Is there no way to update/modify posts on here??
Anyway, everything works soooo much better with a real power supply. I have been xferring stuff back and forth, surfing the internet and playing mp3s through the network for several hours now and not even a hiccup let alone a crash. It seems like 90% of the webplayer problems may be due to the PSU.
