Slimline CDRW....Will this work?

I came across a few parts including this slimline Matsu####a UJDA340 CD-RW drive that looks
like it would be a great fit, only problem is the connector on the back. Anybody know what type of connector this is, or if there is an adapter available for it? Sites I have seen say its an ATAPI IDE drive but are mostly in Japanese.

I'm sure that a few twists of the screw driver will reveal that the interface you see on the back of the drive is nothing more than a "quick plug" interface for a standard laptop sized IDE connection.

I have a similar drive that I robbed out of an old CTX notebook that I am going to try using in my webplayer too. Its slim enought that it seems like it could be mounted under the motherboard, which is what I plan to do with it.

:)

Wish me luck!

You were definately right about the bracket being removable on the rear of the drive but unfortunately it reveals a smaller 50 pin female socket. The small adapter/converter
that came off does show a 44 pin etched (unpinned)layout next to the 50 pin male plug.
Are there special mini 50 pin male adapters that will take me back out to the 44-pin? Thanks for the help!

I'll just warn you this: with what's been said about the webplayer powersupply, it might not like having something like a CD-RW attached. It might not provide enough power. Just a guess.

I like the way it blanks out Matsu####a :)
Wonder is it does that with assphalt?
Anyway...
If you go to
http://www.teksector.net/reviews/accessories/kingwin/kf23_rack/
you will notice this thing has the same connecter
That CD ROM is meant for a portable rackmount I think...

im_eguy,

Looking at that site, that centronics connector is much larger then this one. Do newer Mac notebooks use mini 50pin ide connectors like this? This thing is new as of February 2002
so its definately using something new. Maybe im off on a wild tangent but could it be possible I got ahold of a powerbook cdrw or something?

Ok, I think i found more info on these units. Looking in the box of goodies someone gave me, I also have a Floppy drive with the same connector type. So obviously these are the swappable drives in most powerbooks but yet are pc compliant? All I have found are external firewire boxes for these that supposedly work on mac or pc, anybody know of a USB box that would allow me to use these? If not, they go up to eBay, haha.

I count 44 pins on that adaptor. I bet that with a little soldering you could make it work.

Or, just buy something off eBay. I got a Teac 316e 16x Laptop IDE CDROM for $10.

Might be the way to go....

Found out this is a 50-pin ATAPI Connector when the thin expansion bay card connector is pulled off. Anybody know of a converter to 44-pin?

Heh, to those interested I think i just stumbled upon pinouts for the 50-pin connector :)

Still looking for an adapter if it exists but maybe we can work with this in the meantime.

Getting closer!

This place has a mini 50-pin centronics to 40-pin IDE adapter.

icepick72,
How are you mounting the drive in the webplayer? Do you have any pictures that you can show us?

power issues only matter if you use the unit provided with the webplayer. my advice: dont. it wont power anything extra. go out and buy any other PSU that takes 120 AC and gives 5v DC. the unit that ships is 5A so of course you want it higher. ill see what i can dig up on the internet.

and as for the problem with the cd drive, when mine gets in, ill have a similar problem (68 pins???)

I got a teac cd-38e really cheep, and am able to use the drive from windows (with the bios set to None and using the udma drivers.) It has a standard 44pin header so it is easy to connect to the webplayer. However, I have been unable to get the thing to boot (if the bios knows about the drive, it hangs with a flashing cursor.) Has anyone succeeded in booting off a cdrom/cdrw?
