IBM Drive Question
Not what you think...

i purchased an IBM drive off someone on ebay. It's model dbca-204860. it came today and i unboxed. it was poorly packaged and no static bag. When i took it over to my pc for testing, i shook it slightly and low and behold, there was something rattling inside. I thought, ok great, i just got screwed for $31 but i hooked it up and ran all ibm's diagnostics and it came back error free(0x00). It is a little loud when it is spinning but seems to be working fine.

My question is, anyone out there with this model or similar hear any rattling when the drive is powered down? Is this normal for this type/model drive? In my experience, a HD with a rattling noise=bad drive, but like i said, so far it's working fine.

Yes!

I have a 4.8 gb DARA drive that rattles. I contacted IBM tech support, and this is what I got... Read and smile:

Jason,

It is normal for all drives that have load/unload technology to make a
rattling sound. There is no need to be concerned. The drive will
function
as designed.

Thank You for Contacting IBM
Tanya K.

I got a 20gb Toshiba HD from newegg, right on top of the drive there is a sticker that reads: "*Rattle noise is normal" It's a good thing they had that sticker, cause I was worried about that sound too.

On a seperate question, I also have an IBM 6.4GB model DBCA-206480 laptop HD. It runs HOT. If I leave my finger on the pcb for more than 5 sec while it is running, I can get burned. Is this normal? I don't think it is. Could it be dying? I got it used. There was an incident though, not sure if it's related. but when I was hooking it up to my desktop computer, I might have felt a static discharge when I touched the drive, but it wasn't a very fast zap. but a slow and long one. cause I felt some sharp edge against my finger when I touched the edge of the pcb when reaching the end for the adapter. It could have been the pcb's edge being sharp I don't know. (I thought static discharge are never "slow") So maybe I fried something and now it's running hot? Any ideas?

oh forgot to mention, the drive works fine, but I'm really concerned about the heat. Since pcb heat failures are the #1 killer on ibm drives.

mine runs pretty cool. Maybe something is wrong, or maybe yours is just hotter for whatever reason.
