I forgot to create a partition ...

I wanted to create a partition once the installation of 98se is successful, but in the excitement that everything works great, I forgot about that and sealed it off. Now I don't want to open WP and take out the harddisk for this purpose, so is there any way to create partition now? One way I would imagine is to format doc to bootable dos drive and copy PartitionMagic on to it. But will I be able to see the harddisk if I boot through doc? If it is possible, I would still want to save the doc image first, just in case I need to fall back on to it sometimes. Please help.

BTW, the reason that I want another partition is so that I can keep taking backups.

Thank you,
Hari

I just now tried the following:

- Copied the DriveImage files over the network.
- Booted into DOS.
- Ran DriveImage.
- Took the image of DOC onto harddisk.

No problems encountered. Anyone tried this? Does it work? Something tells me it can't be so simple, so I am doubting this process. Can anybody validate what I did?

Thank you,
Hari

I used the getmimg program to save the DOC image and format it to DOS. I copied the PartitionMagic files and booted into DOC by disabling the IDE bus. But since I had to disable the IDE bus, PartitionMagic can't seem to find the harddisk at all. Is there anyway I can boot into DOC while still having the IDE bus enabled? If it is possible, it will be great to use this as a boot device for maintenance etc. Put all your rescue diskettes on it (such as PartitionMagic) and then you don't need the floppy drive. I will appreciate if anybody can throw some light on this.

Thanks a lot,
Hari

I had the same problem with booting to doc but unable to see my HD under dos. If anyone know of a trick to make dos see the HD please do reply here.

I do have a solution to this however, I just booted to dos from the hd by pushing f8. Then I just ran the dos version of partition magic. Just partition your drive under dos. (it's GUI too) Same thing with imaging it too.

For some reason, every single version of partition magic and drive image I've used have done nothing but crash in 98. On different pcs too. Drive Image won't even start. So I gave up on them. I just install it to get the dos version, and uninstalled them after I copied the dos version out. If anyone know why they keep crashing in 98, I would like to know.

ps. I imaged the doc in dos too, then I restored it using the image and it works.

So can you partition the drive from which the PartionMagic is running? I thought that PM wouldn't let you do this, for some reason. I remember of getting this message some time back. That is the only reason why I posted this question, though I already have the dos version copied on to it. I will try doing this now. Thanks for letting me know about this.

Yes, I was able to create a partition and take backup without any problem. It was silly for I thought it can't be done this way. Thanks again.
