I can't seem to get Windows 98 installed on this thing

Well, what I did was hook the laptop hard drive up to my pc and installed windows 98. Fine. Okay, I put it back into the webplayer and when it detects the Cyrix Cx550 busmaster IDE Controller I get a Blue Screen that says Fatal Exception 0C has occurred. I press a key and another BSOD with 0C comes up and then after that the screen just turns white and I have to unplug it. Any suggestions?

Don't you love it how computers allways work the first time?
I had this problem a while ago, I think it happened after it first detected my modem. I don't know why it did that, but after I re installed windows 98 about 5 times it worked for absolutely no reason at all...

Did you say, "you installed W98 via your laptop" or do you really mean "copied the W98 setup to the drive using your laptop"? Once copied, the drive should be connected to the webplayer. Then you run setup to install W98.

As for the blue/white box, the system is probably running scandisk but the messages can not be seen. To see the messages, you have to get into the BIOS and set some boot options. For me, it is
MAIN->Boot options
SILENT BOOT = DISABLED
QUICK BOOT = ENABLED
SUMMARY SCREEN = ENABLED

I hope this helps.

From the way you said, you seemed to have installed Win98 on the drive from the pc. Instead you are supposed to just copy the installation files into the drive and run setup after connecting it to the WP. When you install windows, it detects various devices that are found on your system (motherboard, sound etc.) and installs devices for them. So in your case, 98 must have installed drivers for your pc devices, NOT for the devices found on WP, so you can't use that installation to boot WP. But when you install 98 right on the WP, this problem will not be there.

HTH,
Hari

Well, if I copy just the install files to the hard drive and then try to install it just from the webplayer, I got a Fatal Exception 0D during windows 98 setup. So the only way to actually even START to get it installed, I had to start the setup on a normal PC and then just delete the extra drivers in safe mode once in the webplayer and let it install the new drivers upon restart into normal mode of windows 98. but of course that didn't work either.

Do you get the fatal exception when you set the date/time? That's when I get an exception on all five of my webplayers. I basically continue on with the install. I am installing W98SE.

I seem to remember one of my drives was causing install problems because of bad clusters. I ran a full scandisk on the drive (several hours). Once scandisk repaired/blocked out the bad sectors, I deleted everything and recopied the setup files to be safe. But since you were able to "install" on your laptop, I'm not sure if scandisk will fix things for you. Just thinking out loud for now...
