The WP requires a little over 5 volts to boot. Which is why my nice AT psu would not power it up. It was an nice older high end one, that was well regulated.

Someone on the [H] board posted that the board was regulated after the usb port. Power was fed straight from the PSU. Leaving them over voltaged. When it spiked, it would make my nic stop working. This got me to thinking how to control the usb voltage. After making some posts, people were thing making a regulator.

I found an easier way.

We have already been running the fans off the serial port. Why not the USB. So I desoldered my power and negative wires and resoldered them to teh serial port, crossed my fingers and hit the power.

It worked. While not 100% stable for large transfers (more than likely an OS or driver problem), I can surf for hours without my nic shutting down. Which is a huge improvement over what I had before.

For an internally mounted USB nic thats the easy way . For an external its a bit more complicated. What you can do though, is cut the tracks leading to the usb port, and solder leads from the serial port to the correct points on the board. I will try and get some pictures up soon, but I figure its a pretty simple mod really.

This should also help those with usb mouse and keyboard problems.

Basically I used one serial port for the Nic and the other for my fans.

How bout just using a self-powered hub? In other words, a hub that requires a power hookup?

hwack, I tried a powered hub and it didn't make any difference. so far the only thing I've found that makes a difference is XP and
only with the Xircom USB dongle. I need to go back and test the other USB enet brands
that I have (six in all I think). and I
need to test the Xircom with file transfers.
so far I only tested it with web browsing
which worked under both XP Home and XP Pro.

sheepdog, do you have a page showing the other mods you've made?

something that I tried that seems to help (in addition to a different power supply that provides 5.10V) is to use what I believe to be the correct OHCI USB driver for windows98se. Windows will install the Compaq OpenHCI driver, however this USB controller has a hardware bug that this driver has a patch for. I chose update driver, select display list of drivers, and choose Standard OpenHCI driver instead of the Compaq one. I don't use the USB adaptor enough to know for sure, but I have not had it drop the connection when testing it after making those two changes.

jpe_dty:

Can you provide more info on what you believe is wrong with the COMPAQ OHCI controller in this part?

Just curious really...

Regards.

Microsoft says the compaq driver enables HydraFix code (whatever that is) and controllers that don't need it might not operate properly with it enabled. The OpenHCI controller in the Geode chipset is a second generation design and does not need code patches to function properly. I do not heavily use the usb port, but it did seem to operate more consistantly (fewer odd delays) with the Standart OpenHCI driver instead of the Compaq OpenHCI driver.

Oh; a further clarification: Part of the problem is that the OpenHCI controller in the Geode chipset is _not_ a Compaq OpenHCI controller - either Windows98se is misidentifying it or the Geode chipset is not providing a unique hardware id.

I changed to the other driver and still no change in stability.

This thread shows some pics of my mods. The PSU is not being used as its output is too close to 5 volts for either of my WP's to work. So its sitting on a shelf.

This also does not show my power switch mod or the latest USB mods. I will try and get some soon though.

Changing the driver only seemed to help after I got the voltage down to a reasonable level. At least I _think_ so: I can't remember the order that I made the changes, so the improvement could have just been because of the lower voltage (I modified one of the webplayer psu's to put out 5.10V). However, I am certain Win98SE is picking the incorrect driver after reading the chipset specs at national semiconductor's site - whether or not that actually affects performance.
