Boot loader

Has anyone tried installing a boot loader on WP? Wondering if we can use it to selectively load to the HD or DOC without needing to change the bios. This should also let us access the HD when booted to DOC, right?

Thank you,
Hari

Which OS are you using? I don't know about other os's, but Win98SE (with the cyrix udma driver installed) can access a hard drive even when you set "None" in the bios and boot off the DOC.

try the boot loader that's built into
Ranish Partition Manager (aka PartMan,
aka Ranish, the exe name is part.exe).
Be careful using this program! backup first.
do not mess with partitions that have data.
http://www.ranish.com/part/

myself, I use XOSL as a multiboot loader.
but XOSL hangs if there is a DOC chip in the
system which defeats what you are trying to
do. I have the DOC chip removed in my
WebPlayer and use XOSL to multiboot between DOS, Win98,
XP, and eventually Linux. the DOS partition
has Norton Ghost, PartMan, Partition Magic,
and bunch of other disk utilities on it.
I boot to it to backup and restore partitions.
especially now while I'm experimenting with
using USB to enet adapters under each OS.
a word of advice to anyone playing with
multibooting OS's on any system - backup,
backup, and backup. http://www.xosl.org

Sorry, I missed to see your reply. Thanks for the suggestion. I have two partitions right now, so I already have a backup of the 98 on the second partition, but in the worst case, after installing the bootloader, if boot itself fails, I am afraid that I will have no way of restoring it also, without opening up webplayer and connecting it back to the pc. I don't want to endup opening it, and your warning scares me even more. So considering this, how safe do you think it is to try this boot loader that you suggested?

And to the other poster, I tried booting into the 98 light creating using the i-hacked.com's image, but I can't see the harddisk either from the explorer or from the PartitionMagic itself, so are you sure you are able to do that? If so, did you select any special settings? I wasn't able to boot into the DOC unless I disable the IDE completely, so if the IDE is disabled right in the bios, I wasn't expecting the OS to see the harddisk, so is my assumption wrong?

Thank you,
Hari

The Cyrix udma drive for windows 98 does not use the bios to access the ide controller, so it is able to see the drives on that controller even if the bios is set to "None"
I have been using this "feature" quite a bit, as it allows booting from the DOC and then copying drivers/etc. off a hard drive.
The particular Cyrix udma driver that I am using (and the only one that worked for me) is at my website http://jpe45305.homeunix.org
