Damn Blinking Cursor.... yep!

I was just finishing installing win98SE on my 2nd webplayer. It booted fine off the HD and into windows. So I started to install the drivers for it. First off, I ran the MediaGX driver for the PCI bridge exe file. When it prompted me to reboot, I clicked no then I retarted using the start->shutdown menu. After the reboot, I would see the win98 load screen, it'll load for a while, then show me the blinking cursor of death for all eternity. I restart it, it'll runs scandisk, then load, then blinking cursor, no matter how manytimes I reboot. (my first webplayer did this once, but after a restart it booted just fine). It would boot to command prompt and safe mode just fine. The settings in the bios was set identical to those posted somewhere for running 98 from HD with "Win95" and "Dos" selected. Anyone have any ideas?

I seem to remember something like this happening (though not the exact circumstances.) Booting to safe mode and removing the net card driver let mine boot normally, and then it rediscovered the card and worked again.

I read all the thread dealing about this issue, and it seems to disappear for most people and there were no definite solution. I just reinstalled win98 again and confirmed that it's the pci bridge drivers that's causing this. The 2nd time I reinstalled win98, I didn't even install the nic. As soon as the pci bridge drivers were installed, it won't boot anymore. I'll play around some more.

Have you ever heard the adage "if it hurts don't do that!"

In this case it's true. Just don't worry about the PCI Bridge device showing a yellow bang in the Device managaer. The driver for it does nothing, other than it is supposed to claim the PCI Bridge device so you WON'T see the yellow bang! Just leave it.

hwhack, I was under the impression that the audio needed the pci bridge driver to work. But I guess not. I'm going to leave it alone. It's working just fine without that stupid driver. Thanks hwhack! you saved me a lot of headach.
