Hi all,

Firstly I aplogize if this has been covered ad infinitum and if this is basic to the board...

I am looking at options to get my mother onto the internet and knowing her uses will be minimal and that she only needs a small communication device I am thinking a hacked webplayer would be ideal.. There are some cheapies on Ebay and I have innards and guts of Laptops / Stylistics / Pc's all over so the hacking should be fun too...

I am looking for any webpages dealing for basic hacking FAQ and pitfalls and also want to know if these 2 priority items can concievably be built in...

She will be on dialup now but get ADSL soon... Can the Webplayer handle a NIC ?? I have a USB NIC and a USB data transfer cable (not truly a nic I think just drivers to bridge connect) so I am thinking that a USB NIC should do it ??

Does it have enough power to run a webcam (over USB again ??) and the associated image capture and display ??

If i can achieve these I am pretty confident that the machine would suffice as it is mostly a communication need now that I have moved to Asia...

Thanks in advance

Phat Phreddy

Yes, a USB NIC should work fine. Search around a little, some don't work. I don't have one myself, I use a wireless network. Webcams are the same. I have heard there are alot that work. I have an IBM "PC Camera" (creative name, huh? ) that works pretty good.

Yeah done some web reading last night and these things look dead simple to hack (hardly a hack even) just open and fit the drive... I have bits of the touchpad 510's that can donate drives so need nothing more than the webpad... They are on ebay at $45 us so that seems cheap enough (and pretty cool) for my mums net connection...

I have a Sitecom USB ethernet adapter... Anyone confirm or deny ???

Also any known working webcam (that can handle good refresh's she will get DSL) would be cool...

Would like to give her a whole package all set up and working as she will have no other PC to network it to...

Mini-PCI slot on the motherboard is definitely the way to go. Lots of the Lucent/Orinoco/Dell/IBM/Xircom cards out there on ebay. Antenna is an issue -- threads below have lots of good info.
