Mouse wheel only moving cursor left & right
Problem with Mouse

All of a sudden the mouse wheel will only move the cursor left and right, not up and down. I changed the batteries in the keyboard and pushed every key, but no help. Anyone know what the the problem is and better yet what will cure it? Thanks

You did restart right? Maybe try taking the ball out and cleaning inside.

No improvement after restarting. I have not taken out the ball. It looks like a major task to open the keyboard and take it out without messing up the keys. Is there a simple way?

Take the plastic around the ball and clean contacts. Round pice of plastic with two holes.

I thought tritron's msg might be a bit unclear. The restraining ring on top of the ball unscrews counterclockwise. Be GENTLE! Once that's off, the ball lifts out. There are no loose parts inside, so it's safe to turn it upside down if need be. The wheels on which the ball rests are prone to getting gunked up ... a little alcohol on a Q-tip swab tends to dissolve the accumulated hand oil and dust. An X-acto knife can scrape it if the buildup is very thick. Remember to clean the wheels all the way around, not just on top! If this doesn't solve it, I'd guess a shorted, loose or broken wire to that wheel.

Thanks to you all for your help and good advise. I was having trouble loosening the restraining ring by hand, so I just put some rubbing alcohol on the trackball and rolled it around a few times, and it started working normally again. That must have cleaned up the wheels inside. It's a good first procedure for anyone else who has the same problem.

Glad its working again.

However, in my experience cleaning mice, you have probably only cleaned it just enough to get it working again for now, and it will stop again soon. You really have to open it and do a thorough job as described in NormConquest's post. Of course, be careful not to break the ring trying to remove it. If you just can't get that ring off, you can remove the screws on the bottom holding the case together. You don't have to worry about having a pile of keys fall out!
