I've gotten as far as getting WinME booted
and running on my Webplayer, and except for the modem, everything appears to be running. I
saw on another thread a driver for it, so I think that's easy to solve.

What hasn't been easy is figuring out how to get WinME to see a Linksys WMP11 that I've desoldered from its PCI host. I read elsewhere that the MiniPCI port in this box is seen as a PCMCIA port to system software, however, windows didn't seem to see anything, and searching for new hardware turns up nothing. I know the minipci card still works, as I plugged it back into it's PCI host and into a win98 system.

I don't see anything in BIOS that looks obvious, but I see that other people have been running it, so I must be missing something. I did install the 3.83 drivers right after installing ME.

Does anyone know what you have to
do to enable the minipci port under ME? So close, yet, so far!

Thanks!

Why do you want to use WinME? It sucks.

Just use Win98SE and stop there. Save yourself!

I used the WMP11 card in the GCT's, I checked the Linksys site and they show that the Linksys drivers should be installed first prior to installing the actual card.

Also the adapter doesn't appear as a PCMCIA controller or slot; which is better that it's Orinico counter part which acts as a PCMCIA controller with Orinico card inserted. The linksys WMP11 appears just as a regular PCI card.

I know that ME sucks, but basically, it's what I have. Don't have a copy of SE to put on. At any rate, I am removing the worst bits by using 98lite with a 95 shell. My intent was to take a look at litestep and see what it had to offer ...

Also, I didn't want to
go through loading 98 (which I do have), the service packs, and any hot fixes. Maybe I should rethink this?

I'll try removing the card, installing the driver, then installing the card. Curiously, the WMP11 config software is running in the background, but I get no icon on the taskbar, and no network card installed.

Thanks for the info, I'll post the result here.

Bigdog, you got it. Bitten by an RTFM bug. Installing the drivers without the card gets you a part of the way - but the thing that gets you all the way is that you have to disable the USB controller - IRQ conflict that neither device seems willing to give up on. I'll have to keep investigating to see if I can get these two things to work and play well with each other.

Now, the issue is the performance of the WMP11 - before I got this card, all the reading I did suggested that the card used to suck, but a firmware update was issued and things are better now. Guess what?

It still sucks.

I have the latest firmware from the Linksys
website (1.4.2), and I have to be within 6 feet of my Linksys router to get even a prayer of a connection. And even at that distance, I connect at a whopping 2Mbps.

Does anyone else
have one of these installed in a webplayer?
Did removing that shield from the PCI card make that big a difference? I can run all over my house with a Netgear PCMCIA in my notebook.

I did some searching, and saw that there might be an unofficial 1.4.9 out there. Any experience with that?

How about better gain antennas? Anyone have a source of these? I didn't want to build a Pringles cantenna, but ...

Thanks!

BigDog:

What did you use for a pigtail on your WMP11?

I had some RG-174U lying around, and used that. I epoxied the antenna connector to the back metal plate, which is also grounded through the chassis. It's beginning to occur to me that either the cable or my mounting may be causing too much in the way of dB losses. I saw on another thread that you like this card better than the Dell/Orinco, so you must have solved this issue. Can you share your methods and materials?

What kind of distance is your WMP11 from your base station?

I'll get this right yet ...

Thanks!

I run winme with no problems, and have been using the dell truemobile/orinoco mini pci cards with no problems, it detected them right away....

This definately sounds like an antenna problem and not a firmware problem to me. But as I don't have that Linksys card, I can't tell you what to do. I guess we'll just have to wait for BadFlash. Sorry.
