I have a WP which is running 98se off a harddrive and is connected to network using 3com 3c460b usb nic (very light use of network). The problem is that it keeps freezing very frequently and the mic sometimes works, and sometimes not, driving me crazy. I intended it to be used as an internet device for voice chat and stuff like that, but I am not really able to make use of it for anything because of the instability. I have looked into the forum for other posts about freezes and it appears like the extra power requirement by the harddrive and usb nic and/or the extra heat produced due to the hardrive may be the reason for the instability. So what is everyone doing to avoid these random freezes? Someone posted in another thread that upgrading to XP made his WP much more stable, but then the voice and video wouldn't work properly. In any case, if it is the problem with hardware, then upgrading to XP or linux will still have the same problem right? Can anyone confirm that installing harddrive is the reason for this instability? Is there any hope for making it more stable? Please advise.

Thanks a lot,
Hari

I gave up on using a harddrive on one of these I was using for continual use. I got a 144MB DOC off ebay, and constructed a win98 image (on my website: http://jpe45305.homeunix.org .) Using just a DOC, the thing is completely stable, and only requires a reboot if IE crashes and does not free up memory. This is a webplayer with no fan, no venting holes added, and a minipci nic.

I had lockups while playing MP3s. If I take the cover off it doesn't lockup.
So I drilled a grid of vent holes directly over the CPU. It works fine now.

I have no HD, just the 48MB doc, and also mine was the ethernet version with the PCI NIC.

My webplayer with a doc usually never freezes. The one with the hard drive freezes about every 10 minutes, and refuses to play an mp3 for more than a minute, all this is with a fan installed on the stock heat sink and the back off.

... would pumping in an extra amp or two be a safe and sufficient solution? Somewhere between the supplied adapter and the amount of DC that would fry this puppy outright, there ought to be a voltage that meets the heavier drain -- and an adapter that would supply that magic number. Or am I overlooking something board-frying here?

Of course, finding that magic number is a dangerous trial and error game...

There was some talk a little while ago about the PS being the problem. More voltage would be bad. Part of the problem is that it doesn't provide enough amps. People were using AT power supplies with a webplayer power jack connected to it. I didn't follow it much...but I think they said it improved things...all though I havent heard anything about it for a while now. Do a search if you want to find it...

If heat is the problem, did anyone observe if directing a table fan on to it will reduce the chance of a freeze (or increase the time before it freezes)?

Also, can the fact that I didn't use any padding material between the harddisk and the webplayer case (I installed the bare harddisk), be a reason for excessive freezes that I am seeing?

Thank you,
Hari

The one I have that hangs seems to behave ok if I take the top of the case off and point a fan at the harddrive. If I point the fan only at the processor it still hangs.
