d-link dwl520+
Workable wireless mini-pci card

The DWL-520+ is a pci 802.11b card. The D-link dwl-520+ that I purchased today has a captive mini-pci card, connected via a cable to a fitting on the bracket. From pictures, other (older?) versions may have had a different design where this was not so. The card is easily disassembled: by removing the two screws adjacent to the bracket the metal shield can be removed, and the mini-pci card then pops out. It now appears to work well under Win98 in my webplayer. I used a Dremel to cut out a .5x.5 inch area of the circuit board containing the screw-on fitting for the external antenna, and the cable is long enough to bring this near the side of the webplayer.

Judging from the photos, it may be easier to use in this way than the Linksys card, where the antenna connection is via the circuit board.

I just got my DWL-520+. I have removed the mini pci card but I am wondering about the .5X.5 cutout you did to the regular pci circuit board. Do I need any of the surface mount stuff or am I just after the antenna mount?

Just the antenna mount. The surface mount stuff appeared to be related to the status leds and the pci->mini pci interface (by recollection).
