USB working, or is it?

Has anyone had any luck getting USB to work? I saw one post stating he had USB ethernet, but my Webplayer just "hangs" whenever a USB device is plugged in. I can still move the mouse, but until I unplug the USB device, I can't click on anything. I'm running Win98SE. Everything else works great - modem, sound, video, etc., just no USB. Win98 picks up the controller as a Compaq controller, changing this to Universal or Standard UHCI or OHCI controller has no effect, other than the UHCI causes the Root Hub to get a yellow splat in the device manager. For whoever posted that they had USB ethernet working, what driver and OS are you using and what ethernet device are you using? Thanks...

Actually, it seems that only certain USB devices cause the system to hang. I dug through my closet to find some USB devices other than a keyboard or ethernet card, and found the cute little optical mouse from my G4 cube. Oddly enough, it works fine. My Kensington trackball refuses to work, as well as my MS Internet keyboard. But this one-button pos from Apple will. My Entegra USB to Lan adapter still refuses to work, but yet my powered USB hub will and my pocket (two-port) hub won't! Apparently the problem is UHCI and OHCI - the same reason my Intel USB camera will work on my PC but not my Mac. The new Macs use OHCI USB controllers where most Wintel boxes use UHCI, with exception of some Compaq laptops. We had this same issue at work when we were trying to get some USB Lan adapters working for an automated download process. The adapters refused to work on certain machines, but worked great on 99% of them. Oddly enough, Compaq laptops with the Compaq USB controller were the main problem children. Coincedentally, these Webplayers have the same controller. So it looks like compatibility between the controller itself and whatever device you are trying to use is the issue. Anyone else having the same luck?

I am using Philips dss350 USB speakers and a Linksys USB10T on mine with no problems. I just tried hooking up my Logitech I-Feel Mouseman USB and there was insufficient power to handle it (internal lights for optical mouse did not light up). So I attached a SIIG 4 port USB hub (which can supply its own power) and then hooked the mouse and Ethernet adaptor to the hub. Took a couple of lockups & reboots for the system to find all the new devices, but now that is working fine too.

ballast,

Please confirm once again that you are able to use a USB Ethernet adaptor (Linksys). And also what operating system is this working under?

Finally, what about video drivers? I recall a post saying that video is limited to only 16 colors? That is pretty pathetic! Can anyone confirm?

Yes - I have no problems connecting to my LAN using a Linksys 10T USB adaptor - I am running Win98SE - again - no problems. I also have a USB Mouse and USB Speakers all hooked up using a 4 port USB Hub. There was insufficient power without the powered hub to power all 3 devices. Until I got new video drivers, WPlayer insisted in 16 color, but new driver downloaded from a site mentioned elsewhere on this forum, allowed me to identify the 'monitor' as an 800x600 lcd and set the display to 800x600 with 16 bit color (16 bit not 16 colors).

I do notice that with the USB mouse and/or USB ethernet adaptor running, WinAmp is affected badly (sound stutters). If I disconnect all USB except the USB speakers BEFORE powering up, WinAmp performs flawlessly.

The 'power' button does not seem to work now that I am running under Win98SE. I have to pull the plug once Win says I can shut the computer off.

And... I still do not have the internal speakers working - did the bit with turning off CD and LineIn - that worked for about 5 minutes till I tried to boost the bass in winamp using the winamp equalizer. (that's why I'm using the USB sound)

FYI... my WebPlayer with Win98 works great with external USB CD-ROM & USB LS-120/floppy drives from Addonics, as well as Apricorn's USB Compact Flash reader and Apricorn's external USB HDD.
