Good soldering irons?
Looking for experiences with various makes of soldering irons

New MessageGood soldering irons? (modified 0 times) homerjsimpson
With all this micro-SMD hacking going on, does anyone have suggestions about a good soldering iron setup?

I'm beginning to think my Radio Shack piece-o-crap $9.99 model ain't the best for this work.

Does yours work well with tiny parts? Did you pay alot for one and it still stinks?

Let us know here, I can't be the only one in the market for a new one. Brands, models, prices & sources would be nice too.

Thanks in advance.

I would like to know about good soldering iron's too.

As far as the $9.99 model, try filing more of an edge to the tip. This will make it easier to solder small resistors.

My friend fried one of his 10 Ohm resistors on the I-opener MoBo, and we jumped a huge 10 ohm resistor right over the top of the other resistor. It's not pretty, but it worked!

http://www.meunierusa.com/ has Weller solder irons & tips, such as a conical tip measuring about 1" long & 1/8" diameter. The tip is totally conical: 1/8" at base, 1/16" after 1/2", dull needle point at 1" tip. They also carry the PLCC 32 con. Mill-Max bios socket for $2.00, dip switches, other soldering iron brands, soldering stations, etc.

Anyone know a good dealer for Pace equipment? I'm thinking of blowing the big bucks on a full-size solder/desolder station. So far, the biggest problem I've had shopping online for this kind of stuff is that nobody wants to list their prices for irons or base stations or whatever. It's all "FAX us a request and we'll send you a quote". The last vestiges of the pre-Internet style of doing business are still with us, it seems.

You know, I just picked up a low end Weller soldering station at Fry's for 35 bucks. It is a variable wattage (5 to 40) unit and it has a variety of tips available. It does the job nicely. Sorry I don't have the model number on hand, but I'm pretty sure it's the lowest level that they make.

I haven't bought one yet, but Webtronics ( http://www.web-tronics.com/autsolirstat.html ) has a temperature-controlled soldering station for $39, and you can get tips down to .3mm diameter...

I suggest the weller WES50. $95 is not too much to pay for a soldering iron that will likely last me 10 years.
