New Messagevideo display quality version differences (modified 0 times) friar
Although this is my first post here, let me set some things straight right from the first:
I don't consider myself to be a hacker and I'm not a hacker 'wannabe' I merely like the i-opener design and I want one, and maybe am foolish enough to think it would be fun to build one. I have searched using this board's search function for various different keyword combinations, and YES I have read the FAQs also. If there is anything else that someone wants to flame me about, go right ahead if it makes you feel better and keeps you in school.
OK, with that disclaimer out of the way, here is my question. Do the new versions of the IO have a better display than the older ones? I am looking to buy an IO and am leaning towards the V4 version anyhow (although from what I have read here it seems maybe the V1 might be easier to hack).
Thanks for any advice!!!
Again, please excuse me for being a newbie and asking a newbie question, but if you want to flex your flaming skills so as to feel more like a real man, hey go right ahead.

LOL! First off, you can't just "buy" a version 1 I-O... if you buy from CC or CUSA, you get a V4/3.5/4.5 or whatever the newest one is. If you go to flea-bay, you can get a v1, for around 1 million dollars. A semi-reasonable price, check out my auction at http://www.fleabay.com/uraloser/uliketowastemoney/uralittlerichboy.htmlSecond, the video quality is ####ty, regardless of what version you get. So go buy a V1 I-O. In fact, call netpliance and ask for it directly, you'll get better results... by october. ROTFL.

friar,

You can pick up an io on flea bay for about $200. Purchasing from CC, assuming you can get one reasonably fast, will cost about the same, with a mandatory three month service contract.

I have modded several versions and have not seen a difference in the video quality from one unit to another.

If you go the badflash bios chip replacement route (vs. qnx flash), one version is generally as good as another.

I have a v2 I-Opener, two v4's and one v3b... Arrgh, I should actually make a website now that I think about it. :) Anyway, if you get the chance - get a v4, they're the easiest to mod if you're going to go the badflash route and they are much more upgradable. As for the screens, it's a tradeoff - as near as I can tell, the old Sharp screen looks smoother in dark areas whereas the Hitachi <sp?> has more of a grainy multicolor thing going on. :) The Hitachi <sp? again> has more even backlight distribution whereas the Sharp has a pronounced lighter area at the top and bottom of the screen and an overall red/green tinge about it. As for the "refresh" - both screens seem exactly the same... They're cheap dualscan screens and suck for anything moving. If you aren't going to compare side-by-side, don't worry about your screen and get a V4 - the "unhackable" rumors are just to keep the prices on eBay inflated.

Thanks everyone for all your input. I am going to get one from an online auction, and it sounds like V4 is what I want. Thanks again!
